With so many high action blockbusters being churned out of Hollywood, it is nice to see that now and again, one of these films can sit back and not take itself, or its plot, too seriously. Im talking of course about the excellent Charlie's Angels. It is based around the hit TV show that launched the careers of Farah Fawcett (phwoar!!!), Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith. The 3 beautiful ladies worked as Private detectives for a gentleman named Charlie who never reveals himself. The ladies perform all sorts of high energy, villain-chasing with the sexy panache you would expect.
Transformed to the Silver screen, 25 years after the show was released meant a few changes were needed. Firstly, the cast was going to be changed. We could not expect the 50 year old originals to deliver the sultry image needed for the sexy trio. This despite them stil looking gorgeous today! Instead we are graced with the acting skills of 3 of Hollywoods finest "2nd rate" 1st ladies. I mean this with no disrespect to them. I just feel that they would not be my first choice when making a film with 3 sexy ladies in it. Firstly we have Cameron Diaz who we all know from such films as "the Mask". While she is normally just the face to look at, here she is required to play the part of a high action Private "I"! She does this well. However her character is also portrayed as a "dumb Blonde" so she is quite at home in this role.
Next up Comes Lucy Lui from "Ali McBeal" fame. Here she is able to deliver a slightly different role to her TV character while still maintaining that stern, serious attitude.
Lastly is the cute little girl from ET who discovered most of the vices of Hollywood. Thats right, Drew Barrymore. While her antics offscreen have been well publicised, her onscreen performance remains one of the best. I think she is one of the better younger actresses in Hollywood and holds her own here.
Add to this the comedy genius of Bill Murray who I felt is highly underused in this film and you have the makings of a good film.
The plot is somewhat weak and totally overkilled with the special effects but, hey, that is the idea. Its not meant to be serious! If you watch things like "Mission Impossible" you will know about the overambitious stunts played out by Tom Cruise. The exploding helicopter that blows him onto the train in the Eurotunnel being one. Charlie's Angels does a similar thing but with a "tongue in Cheek" attitiude. You are meant to sit there and say "Oh my god! that is sooooo far fetched" because it they way it is meant to be!!!!
Saying this, some of the special effects are quite good while some look pretty amateurish.
With a typical happy ending, the film has been deliberately been left wide open for a sequel which is being filmed currently. We saw that one coming a mile off. Personally, Im looking forward to ogling all of the ladies in those tight costumes that they wear again!
Bits I liked? The fun aspect to the girls lives that are explained to a brand new audience. This allows both old fans and newer ones to enjoy it the same as the original storyline is explained. The comedy fight scenes were some of the best around and looked as though they had been borrowed from the set of "Martial Law" on Channel 5.
When can I recommend this for? A night when you want something fun to watch and does not take a lot of concentration. Its a fun movie for most of the family!

Advantages: Super sexy, mega styling, nice soundtrack... Disadvantages: No story, bad acting, cheesy gags, ridiculous action, tacky product placement, a character coming back from the dead and pathetic baddies. Oh well, the TV series was rubbish too.......
