Based on the babe-a-licious show from the 1970s, CHARLIE'S ANGELS is a defiantly goofy action movie featuring plenty of comedy and a strong sense of girl power. Three talented...
more...young women work for the mysterious Charles Townsend: Natalie (Cameron Diaz), the bubbly blond science expert; Dylan (Drew Barrymore), the rebellious tomboy; and Alex (Lucy Liu), the tough Angel who has trouble telling her boyfriend that she's a highly skilled secret agent. The Angels are assigned to locate Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell), a kidnapped computer expert whose new software could threaten global security if it were to fall into the wrong hands. The women go undercover to investigate this devious tycoon and are faced with double crosses, explosions, and the mysterious Thin Man. From the acclaimed music-video director McG (Joseph McGinty), CHARLIE'S ANGELS wastes little time on plot, instead presenting audiences with a series of spectacular MATRIX-style fight sequences, car chases, and stunts. Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu as the three Angels give terrific performances worthy of a new breed of female action hero, kicking major butt while remaining lovable and sexy. The movie also stars Bill Murray as the Angels' mentor, Bosley, and John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie.

Let's get one thing straight at the start: this film is not trying to be the original series, it is simply a big spoof of itself. I didn't get this the first time i saw it so, as a result, I didn't like it. If you watch it as a pointless action comedy that's just being entertainment, then it's an enjoyable film.
Right from the start of the film, when LL Cool J hurls himself and a diamond smuggler out of the door of a passenger plane, you know that this film is all about spectacular action scenes. And as they land in a boat and LL Cool J strips off a bodysuit to reveal Drew Barrymore underneath, you realise that - for better or for worse - this film is going to be completely ridiculous. I can't remember the character's names, because they don't matter. It's all about three attractive women running around kicking ass for a living on the orders of some old guy they never meet. What I do remember, however, is Bill Murray's classic performance as the middleman. He plays the role perfectly, right down to the point where he has to act like an Austin Powers substitute throughout a party.
Cameron Diaz plays the innocent but very sexy character well, Lucy Liu plays the intelligent, thoughtful character well and Drew Barrymore plays the fun-loving character with a bad girl past impressively, as you'd expect given her own background. One man, though, steals the whole film completely. His charcter only crops up in the story a couple of times, for short periods of time, but they're the best scenes in the film. Tom Green (Drew Barrymore's now real-life husband) stars as Chad; the marginally unstable, insecure, likeable loser blatantly in love with Barrymore's character [watch for the scene in which he climbs down the boat's exhaust pipe uttering the immortal words, "The Chad is great, The Chad Is Great, The Chad Is... Stuck!"].

Another terrific scene is the one where the girls are fighting the strange pale man in the bowler hat in an alley, with 'The Prodigy"'s 'Smack my Bitch up' playing fiercely in the background, keeping the fight rolling along.

If you can get hold of this film, it's good for a watch or two, for entertainment value, but not a nineties classic like, for example, Romeo + Juliet.

If you get the DVD then, once again, you get lots of added goodies; the trailers, cut scenes, bloopers and the like. Watch it, buy it, but don't expect people to be impressed when you bring it out...
