Charlies Angels was a film that split audiences. Some loved it, some hated it and some were indifferent. I always went into seeing it of the opinion that it wasn't going to be high brow entertainment with a solid plot. No what I wanted was good looking girls kicking ass and Bill Murray being deadpan as ever. I got both and naturally I was happy.
The angels (Barrymore, Liu and Diaz) are brought in on a kidnapping case where a young software tycoon has gone missing. It turns out a rival company wants his software that could bring an end to privacy. Of course all is not what it seems and soon the angels are drawn into a battle of tight outfits, perfect hair and kung fu action. The plot is silly but the goofy performances make up for it with everyone looknig like they're having a good time. Barrymore is here usual endearing self and I'm sure anything that has Diaz prancing about in spiderman pants should be worthy on anyone's time.
The dvd itself is not a bad effort but nothing fantastic either. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and the transfer is pretty much perfect. All the glorious colour schemes are faithfully re-produced perfectly. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound kicks some ass throughout with the rears getting a great work out especially during the alley fight.
The extras kick off with an audio commentary from director McG and DOP Russell Carpenter. They are quite good at speaking about the film and generally seem to have the right idea of how they approached the film.
A series of featurettes cover such topics as Set design, Effects, Stunts and Costumes. These are very brief segments that feature some mild behind the scenes footage and interviews as well as clips from the film. It would have been better to edit them altogether into one whole.
The deleted scenes feature some good stuff like the angels dressed as men discussing Roger Corwin's 'size' in the bathroom as he stand between them.
We also get to see the alley fight scene in a pre special effects mode with wires etc. It's quite interesting to look at how things were pulled off.
The out-takes and bloopers are a bit if a cheat as they are merely the end credits to the movie and nothing new.
Two music videos follow with of course Destiny's Child and an Apollo 440 re-working of the original theme tune. Of course it's not as good as they're Lost In Space rework.
Finally there are the usual trailers and production notes to round out things.
You either love em of hate em but this is a really fun film with a lot of silly goofy fun that can be enjoyed and actually keeps your attention off the dumb plot. It's just a shame the extras aren't that imaginative.

Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'

Review of Charlie's Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz... Disadvantages: The most stupid film ever, even worse than The Avengers, possibly as bad as Batman and Robin
