NOTE: This was originally filed under the TV series because I couldnt find Charlies Angels. I didn't realise about the rogue apostophes so apologies if you've already read this. I've rewritten the original so you can go back check and rerate if you want. It should be next to this in my list.
I finally got round to watching “Charlie’s Angels” and actually it was quite fun. Everyone seemed to be having a great time, there are lots of big bangs and special effects (mostly well done) , reality is put on hold for the duration of the movie, and it doesn’t drag at all. If you want something to exercise the grey cells then this is not for you.
It stars Cameron Diaz , Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu as the three “Angels” who are detectives hired by the mysterious “Charlie” who’s face we never see (but played by John Forsyth of Dynasty fame) to rescue kidnapped software genius Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell). The Angel’s mentor and contact with Charlie is John Bosley , played with tongue firmly in cheek by the excellent Bill Murray. There are appearance by Matt Le Blanc and Tim Curry hams it up excellently as a minor villain Roger Corwin , though worryingly he’s beginning to start looking like Jeremy Beadle, now that is scary.
Anyway the plot twists because Knox’s kidnap has been staged to entice Charlie out of hiding as Knox believes that Charlie killed his father. A flimsy enough plot but it allows for bad baddies and lots of excellently stage martial arts fights, ridiculous acrobatics stunts worthy of Jackie Chan, lots of explosions and lots of gratuitous , but so obvious its funny, sexual innuendo, such as when the girls emerge from the sea strip off, in front of a rather large , erect tower. Humm. Or the bit where Lucy Liu spends a long time sitting astride a rather large rocket, or Drew Barrymore tied up in a chair with legs spread very wide before taking about seven guys (in a fight of course, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?).
I was not expecting much from this film, so was very surprised to enjoy it after the slatings it received from the critics. The explosions are big and fiery, the villains are despicable, the violence is very much A-Team standard I don’t remember anyone actually getting killed on screen, the fights are well choreographed, while Diaz and Barrymore act like 15 year old girls, and Liu provides a bit of sophistication and intelligence.
My advice is that you get it out on video, switch your brain off for a bit, get a couple of beers and some crisps (or wine & dips if you’re sophisticated) , and have a very enjoyable couple of hours. I did.

Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'

Review of Charlie's Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz... Disadvantages: The most stupid film ever, even worse than The Avengers, possibly as bad as Batman and Robin
