It would appear that i am the only person who doesn't like this film. Sorry.
I saw this at the Cinema when it was released, I knew what to expect from it, Hard Girl action flick that really doesn’t take itself too seriously with a top cast and great special effects. This is exactly what I got, but to be honest I didn’t think it was all that.
Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu play the three Angels, helped along the way by Bosley (Bill Murray). I had never seen the old TV show but I knew what it was about. These three women basically go around in a James Bond kind of way, beating people up and generally saving the day, and that is what we get in the movie, albeit on a much larger scale.
As already stated the special effects are top notch. The fighting scenes are superb. Very Matrix they are too but with the added bonus of having the three gorgeous cast members being the ones flying all over the gaff in slo-mo. Sexy indeed!
This is the only thing I liked about the movie, why? Because the rest of it was just a bit too stupid for my liking. Cameron Diaz’s ditzy character just plain annoyed me, which is a shame as I rather like Cam. Drew was the best out of the three as the geezer-bird of the group and Liu performed well.
Bill Murray didn’t manage to make the movie any better either. He is barely in it and doesn’t really do anything special.
A huge disappointment but having said that I know most people will love it. It is great popcorn material (ie Mindless, watchable, colourful, ‘fun’) but it goes to over the top for my liking. Yeah maybe that’s the point but it just didn’t sit well with me.
I’m sure you are all wondering why I bought the DVD if I disliked the movie. One answer….Extra’s!
The disc is packed. Multiple featurettes talk about the SFX, the Director, The Fight Scenes…all interspersed with interviews with the cast. The deleted scenes are mainly extensions of footage that made the final cut, but they are a welcome addition. There are outtakes which you will already have seen at the end of the film at the flicks. There are two music videos (one is the Annoying Destiny Childs ‘Question’ song), filmographies, trailers and a rather good directors commentary.
I suppose I will grow to like this film with repeat viewing but this is one guy who won’t be calling on the Angel’s help.
FILM 2 out of 5
DVD 4 out of 5

Advantages: A generally good cast; well choreographed screen action; good variety of music. Disadvantages: Attempts to be too clever for its own good; has no concept of pacing; not all music tracks are suitable.
Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'

Review of Charlie's Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz... Disadvantages: The most stupid film ever, even worse than The Avengers, possibly as bad as Batman and Robin
