WARNING – This is a shamelessly sexist review of this movie!
If you are looking for a flashy, trashy, all-action movie full of fast cars, boats and high kicking gorgeous girls – look no further.
Charlie’s Angels has all these things and more! A bit like a low brow James Bond movie (heh – is there a ‘HIGH BROW’, James Bond flick ?)
The story….forget the story, you came for the babes didn’t you? Well Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu play the Angels with certainly the first two spending much of the film trying hard not to let their boobs pop out of their costumes! Now that’s definitely a job I’d like – you know..the guy that has to tape them down to stop them just …flopping out when they are not supposed to!
Oh yeah, Bill Murray is excellent as the hopeless, hapless ‘Bosley’ – Charlie’s ‘gopher’ and the go-between who contacts the Angels for their assignments. The girls each have their own character – much like in the original TV Series from the 70s – with both Drew and Cameron showing their comic abilities with some one-liners. Ms Liu, I found to me slightly miscast. Sure she can kick with the best of them, but personality – she has little! Maybe as the lesser of the trio ‘star-wise’ she was in awe or more likely she just was not given the lines. Her on-screen boyfriend in this movie is none other than Matt le Blanc of ‘Friends’ and ‘Lost in Space’ fame. His role is a minor one though, I guess not to detract from the main cast.
OK – The story then, if I must. The Angels have to find kidnapped computer whiz Eric Knox and his marvellous piece of voice recognition software that could be very dangerous if in the wrong hands. Those ‘wrong hands’ belong to one of Hollywood’s favourite British baddies - Tim Curry - who plays Millionaire Roger Corwin. But there are a few twists along the way. It seems that the overall target is Charlie himself – it’s all a bit of a ploy to flush him out into the open. I won’t reveal why, who and how – just go see the movie and enjoy the ride.
Like I said, this is not a ‘thinking mans film’ – the sight of Ms Diaz flying through the air unleashing a karate kick, while the zip on her jumpsuit edges further down towards her navel and her boobs resolutely refuse to do the right thing and leap out into view! Ms Barrymore – once a ‘Hollywood wild child’, famous for ‘getting them out’ for David Letterman live on TV, has similar costume….’designs’. Definitely no strain on the eyes and not taxing for the brain.
Roll on Charlies Angels Two !

Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'
