Charlies Angels is another 70's TV-series to big screen attempt and to be honest it does not do all that much better than the easily-forgettable Avengers. The opening sequence of the movie sets the tone firmly as self-parody... Drew Barrymore improbably disguised Mission Impossible 2 style.
The film has a poor script and a slightly above average plot (for action films) with a fairly effective midway twist. The poor script is, perhaps, the most infuriating of the films' detracting points as there is very little that the actors can do with it. Of the cast Bill Murray, easily the most comfortable with comedy (and bad scripts), comes off best. As for the trio of intrepid angels (Barrymore, Diaz and Liu) it seems their primary function was to look good, which personally I think they achieved admirably, and, amidst the hair-tossing and scantily clads posing, to kick some butt.
At this point I'll concentrate on the action, which is certainly one of the films redeeming features, a mixture of matrix-style slow downs, mission impossible-esque stunts, all the while with our three lycra/bikini/hot-pant clad heroines performing all manner of acrobatics. The action achieves the over-the-top parody that the script fails to get close to, and as such makes the film an amusing spectacle.
Sadly Charlies Angels is another underperforming TV to big screen adaptation, the poor script is the main cause. Having said this, I did enjoy it, the movie is interspersed with humourous moments (the best of which are the out-takes at the end), the action is stylishly outrageous and looking at three beautiful, scantily clad women is never going to be torture. All in all watchable but disappointing

Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'

Review of Charlie's Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz... Disadvantages: The most stupid film ever, even worse than The Avengers, possibly as bad as Batman and Robin
