I was surprised. I only went to see the movie because I had just bought a yearlong pass for the local (semi-local!) UGC cinema and I want to get my money’s worth out of it!
The trailers to the film annoyed me - it didn't seem whether it wanted to be a serious action film or a cheesy 80s romp. In many ways, the actual movie danced on that dangerous line as well. Huzzah! The movie managed to just pull it off. There was plenty of action and the cheesy 80s stuff was able to snuggle in there. I think Cameron Diaz's (spelling?) character helped keep those two extremes together.
I can see why some people might compare it to the Matrix. Whereas the Matrix is dark and heavy with Street Cred, Charlie’s Angels is comic book bright and (probably) lacking in that cool cred… but the action choreography which the Matrix made so popular is present in the Angels and unlike some recent films, it is done well in Charlie's Angels. Bullets slow down so you can see what is happening. Flying kicks leap through the air in slow motion.
Don't go to this movie to watch the action. Don't go to this movie to watch cheesy 80 stuff. Don't go to this movie to ogle at the pretty girls.
Go to this movie and watch it in the spirit in which it was filmed; you will enjoy it then.

Most people I've heard talking about the movie said that they were surprised -- in one way or the other. I was surprised at how much fun I had with it. Mischa

Advantages: Anything that has Cameron Diaz in it, wet and 'unzipped' to the waist has got to get 5 stars Disadvantages: not sure Lucy Liu was the right casting for the 3rd 'Angel'

Review of Charlie's Angels (DVD)
Advantages: Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz... Disadvantages: The most stupid film ever, even worse than The Avengers, possibly as bad as Batman and Robin
