Charlie’s Angels Full Throttle is the second in the Charlie’s Angels films. For anyone who doesn’t know, Charlie’s Angels are 3 women, Natalie, Dylan and Alex (played by Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu) who work undercover for the elusive Charlie. The films are based on the TV series from the 70’s (I think), and neither the films nor the series reveal Charlie’s face, all communication is done via a telephone speaker.
The Plot This film begins in Outer Mongolia, where the Angels have been sent to rescue US Marshal Ray Carter (Robert Patrick) who has been kidnapped and his ring stolen. Shortly after he is rescued, a second man is attacked and his ring is also stolen (I can’t remember the name, but he was played by Bruce Willis). The rest of the film follows the Angels on their mission to recover the two rings. The rings separately are no use to anyone, but together they form an encoded file detailing all the people who have been placed in the Witness Protection Programme, giving their new identities and locations.
My Thoughts It’s
quite hard to describe exactly how I feel about this feel, on the one hand it’s absolutely ludicrous, the stunts the Angels perform are impossible to say the least, but on the other hand it’s so ludicrous it’s funny and it makes for great entertainment.
This is actually my daughter’s film; she watched the first movie so many times the DVD nearly wore out, so I had to get her the second for her birthday. The first time she watched it she was a little confused as to why Bosley was white in the first film, but was black in this one, and since I’d missed that bit first time round I couldn’t explain it to her. It turns out that Bosley mark II (Bernie Mac) is the original Bosley’s (Bill Murray) step brother, so it makes a little more sense now. There’s a bit of an all star cast going on in this film with appearances from Bruce Willis, Pink, Shia LaBeouf, John Cleese, Matt LeBlanc, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, The Pussy Cat Dolls and Carrie Fisher. Cleese is quite amusing as Alex’s bemused father, who has absolutely no idea what she does for a living, and LeBlanc plays Joey Tribbiani under a different name. I didn’t recognise Pink at first, she looked almost girlie, her part in the film isn’t huge, but she does supply the main theme song for the film. Demi Moore plays the ex Angel who the new Angels look up to.
The scene with Carrie Fisher as a nun reminded me of another film but I just can’t think of what it was. The scene involved the 3 Angels sat behind school desks shuffling along as the nun moved, and not knowing drove me mad whilst I was watching it, because I couldn’t get it out of my head. And now I’ve written this it’s starting to bug me all over again! But back to the film.... There aren’t a great deal of special effects (as far as I could tell), most of the effects you see involve the Angels in the fight scenes, where they have included Matrix style air hanging and air walking.
Of course it wouldn’t be Charlie’s Angels without a lot of sexual references, not so much in the actual dialogue, but the constant views of the Angel’s backsides and chests, the lingering glances and the overly dramatic hair tossing that were also part and parcel of the first film. If you’ve read any of my other film reviews, you’ll know that soundtracks go in one ear and out the other with me, and don’t stop in the middle long enough for me to remember them. But the music in Charlie’s Angels is so in your face even I noticed it. Of course that could be because there were a lot of tunes that I knew at well, songs like; M C Hammer –You can’t Touch This, which is brilliant, because all the Angels stop what they’re doing to dance the same moves as Hammer did, and even though it’s a really awful song you can’t help but tap along. There were snippets from lot of 80’s tune (which is my era), Bon Jovi – Living on a Prayer, Rebel Rebel – David Bowie (one of my favourites), Flashdance –Irene Cara, and from other eras there was Everlasting Love, Firestarter and loads more. One that made me laugh (but confused the kids) was Who are you? by The Who, which played when they dressed up as CSI to investigate a crime scene.
The extras on the DVD include; McG’s Telestrator Commentary, Writer’s Commentary, Angel Vision Trivia Track, Angels Makeover, Pussycat Dolls Featurette, XXX-treme Angels Featurette, Pink music Video and Full Throttle Jukebox, along with a few others. The extras don’t really interest me, so the only one I’ve looked at is the Jukebox, I was hoping they’d play the full songs, but they only have two guys chatting about why they picked that particular song and then show the same piece from the film. Overall an enjoyable film, if somewhat unbelievable.
