In an absolute car crash of an awful movie, it’s difficult to know quite where to start………
Following on from the trashy-but-fun Charlie’s Angels follows the inevitable sequel, re-teaming the original cast (minus Bill Murray) plus the addition of Demi Moore. This time around the director (McG) has gone for the “bigger is better” approach so we get more explosions, more fight scenes, more CGI and pretty much nothing else (including a coherent storyline).
The plot involves the retrieval of two rings that have gone missing. The rings aren’t you’re your average pieces of trashy tin from a high street jewellers however, they contain data of everyone on the Government’s witness protection scheme. The rings have to be recovered by Charlies Angels before they “fall into the wrong hands” which involves much fighting, acrobatics and blowing things up…..
Although the first Charlies film was trashy and throw-away, it zipped along at a fair old pace and was perfect entertainment for the lads after closing time on a Friday night. Even the effects of 10 pints wouldn’t provide beer goggles good enough to make this dire sequel look like a good film. So what exactly is wrong with it? Where do I begin….. To start with the special effects are truly awful (in particular, the motorbike chase scene). For a new blockbuster to display such poor CGI is just a plain insult. Then there’s the story: I was never under the impression that this film was going to rival Citizen Kane in the story telling stakes, but this film is just a collection of action scenes stapled together to make up the running time of a movie. There is almost no plot, no story development, and the viewer is frequently left thinking ‘why are they here?’ ‘what are they doing’. Lastly, the much publicised re-appearance of Demi Moore also disappoints as it turns out to be just a prolonged cameo appearance.
The only good point worth mentioning is that the central trio are as engaging as ever and work well. The chemistry between the three of them is self evident on the screen. It is just a pity they had to appear in this film where they are frequently humiliated as the audience becomes increasingly uncomfortable.
If you’re looking for a bit of Saturday evening action pop-corn fodder then there are far better films around than this. Check out Shanghai Knights, Terminator 3 or the excellent Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind. Don’t waste your time or money on this – that way hopefully they won’t be encouraged to make any more of them. If you think Charlies Angels might be worth a look, take a leaf out of Bill Murray’s book: Stick around for the first one and then bail – don’t go near the sequel.
