Last summer just as the holidays started I typically caught a really bad cold. I am almost certain I was dying and, no I'm not being melodramatic, and it was then that I first saw Angels bathed in a heavenly glow! To be more precise it was Charlies Angels and the glow was coming from the tv screen, but you get the picture. Their ass kicking antics, snappy musical numbers and Charlies soothing voice all worked together to ease my fevered brain and since then I have been a somewhat unwilling fan! So when Charlies Angels Full Throttle (Directed by McG?)came out in the cinema I had to go see it to discover whether it was the fever that had made me enjoy Charlies Angels or whether I actually have bad taste!
This may surprise some of you but there is actually a plot to this movie, though blink and you might very well miss it. Basically two rings which somehow store information about the witness relocation program have been stolen by some naughty so and its the angels duty to recover them before they can be sold to the worlds numerous crime syndicates, the Irish Mafia being the front runners. Thats it, thats the plot, wow that was really
painless, I wish all films could be so easily explained! I suppose I could elaborate a little, as the Angels all have their own little sub-plots. Dylan (Drew Barrymore) reveals a secret, not so angelic past which could have connections to the case. Alex (Lucy Liu) has trouble explaining her job to her father (John Cleese) and Natalies (Cameron Diaz) relationship with her boyfriend Pete gets more serious.
Though all the Angels have returned one quite obvious no-show is Bill Murray as Bosley, who is therefore replaced by Bernie Mac (Oceans 11). Bill Murray and Lucy Liu apparently had a big bust up during the first movie (Handbags at Dawn!)and so he decided that he wasn't going to go full throttle. Although Bernie Mac is a good replacement I think I prefer Bill Murray, which is probably due to my obsession with Ghostbusters as a youngster!
Possible Spoiler
=== Crispin Glover (Back to the future) returns as the creepy thin man. Apparently being blown off a roof with a torpedo doesn't have the effects it once did! Despite still having that weird hair sniffing fetish, he seems to have turned over a new leaf and actually helps the Angels! ===Spoiler Over======Matt LeBlanc and Luke Wilson also return as Alex and Natalies love interest though to be honest they are both a waste of space, as they aren't given much to do. I suppose the only reason they are there is to show that the Angels can relate to men in a way which wont result in the man ending up in the intensive care unit!
There is a hell of a lot of cameos in this film I already mentioned John Cleese, but the most important is Demi Moore as fallen Angel Madison Lee. She is very convincing as a bitter Angel(something tells me shes had practice!) who becomes a suspect. However I think I spent most of the time when she was on screen trying to decide just how she had spent that 200,000 to get in shape for the role! Her Ex-husband Bruce Willis also makes a cameo as do those rather lolly-pop proportioned Olsen twins. Jaclyn Smith an Angel from the original series also makes a brief appearance giving advice to Dylan. Its quite nice to see her in the film as I heard the original angels were reluctant to appear in the films unless they had a large part. One cameo which I found a bit pointless was Shia Lebeouf (God! I thought I had a bad last name!) as Max. He is an orphan the angels save who basically disappears for the entire film only to reappear at the end to announce that he will become a Bosley(I assume this means an assistant to the angels!), which suggests there will be a third installment (Dare I dream!)
The special effects are quite impressive, if a little over the top, especially during the fight scenes. In one scene Drew Barrymore slides under a table in a way that I cannot even describe let alone do. Then again it would be a bit of a let down if they just punched an enemy in the face, I mean wheres the fun in that!
I enjoyed the soundtrack of the film, especially Pinks (whoops, I forgot she also makes a cameo!)summer tune, Feel good time. Firestarter is again used for the fight scenes and although a lot of tracks are used I dont think it distracts you but rather enhances the Charlies Angels experience!
This film is rated 12A and I think this is quite a sensible rating as there is little swearing and no sex, and the violence isn't gory. I would say that there is quite a lot of sexual innuendo especially between Alex and her father which I thought was pretty tasteless, but hopefully a 12 year old wouldn't understand it, so I think its safe to take them.
I have discovered I must have bad taste as I enjoyed this film, though it may not sound like it! If you just accept the fact that it has little to no plot and that it often feels like McG has strung a load of music videos together, you will enjoy it, if not then I think you will leave the cinema feeling that the Angels are the work of the devil and that Charlie is one unlucky fellow!
