Charlies angels was a lot of harmless fun and everyone seemed to be having a good time.
Essentially all the same rules apply to this sequel. everybody returns except bill murray for some more high kicking antics. the story involved some guff about the witness protection scheme in the us. All the names of those in the scheme are housed on two rings, useless apart but when together a real threat. Basically the information is of great use to the various crime families who've been dealt blows by those in the system. The film opens with the angels retrieving one of the rings and rescuing a us marshall. But then it's found out that dylan (drew barrymore) is one of those in the scheme. This wouldn't be so bad if her ex-boyfriend hadn't just been released from jail and not was out for vengeance. It also appears that someone is behind the ring plot and it turns out its an ex-angel
named madison (demi moore)
Well ultimately the plot is incredibly stupid but that doesn't matter because for 108 minutes your attention is completely diverted in other directions. The thing that matters is that drew barrymore, cameron diaz and lucy liu seem to be having a terrific time on screen and director mcg puts all of this good time stuff on screen. right from the opening you have a lot of kitsch stuff like electric bull riding. It's all over the top and completely goofy. but it's amusing and once diaz is revealed I couldn't care about anything else.
Yes it's safe to say that guys will get a bigger kick out of this movie. it's a complete wet dream as we have the angels in bikinis, tight clothes and even taking part in a kinky french dance parade. It's all very naughty and very sexy. Needless to say my tongue was hanging out and I'm not ashamed to say it.
The acting is generally okay, the angels themselves are out to have a great time. Demi Moore makes a welcome return to the screen as the villain and she looks great and fit's in as the perfect foil. The lack of Bill Murray is made up in part by the appearance of Bernie Mac as the new Bosley. At first I was a bit apprehensive but Mac actually has some good lines although I would have liked him to have been given more free reign as the man is pretty funny. The other villain is played by Justin Theroux, he gets the thankless role of pantomine villain as an irish gang member who's accent seems to be scottish/irish with a brief stop off in farming country. Thankfully Crispin Glover returns as the Thin Man but he's woefully underused and seems more of an afterthought. The film also features a number of cameos from the likes of Bruce Willis, Carrie Fisher, John Cleese and Pink. Matt Le Blanc and Luke Wilson also reprise their roles from the original movie. Not only that but there's an appearance from an original angel although it's a bit hokey.
Director McG uses his music video style to good effect in the movie. Normally I'm not a big fan of MTV style film-making but this is the kind of movie where I'll allow it. McG seems to be in tune with what works musically and he's also got a knack for picking tunes that secretly people love such as MC Hammer's 'U Can't Touch This'. There are a number of dance sequences throughout the film and McG gives them all a funky neon gloss. This kind of style won't work on other movies but I'd like to see him tackle a musical. The action in the movie is incredibly over the top and furiously edited, everything just moevs along at such a pace that you can't concentrate for one second. For some reason I just went along with the ride on this one. I forgave the fact that there were characters in the movie that served no purpose whatsover, I forgave it all just for one sight of Diaz and Co grinding their hips on the big screen.
If you liked the first movie then this is more of the same. If you loathed the first one then sorry move along-nothing new to see here. Full Throttle is an instantly forgettable movie but while it's there in front of you might as well enjoy it for what it is and remember that the original Angels show was no shakespeare either.
