Don’t even consider watching this film if you aren’t prepared to leave your brain in the foyer. One and a half hours of air-headed action, barely believable stunts and a story which frankly wouldn’t challenge a two year old.
But what did I really think?
Great film, that’s what, I wanted to be entertained and bombarded by special effects and mild titillation, Full Throttle delivered on all counts. The Angels, Cameron Diaz; Drew Barrymore; Lucy Liu are all perfect for their respective roles, playful, sexy, a bit wild. Additional cast members succeed to varying degrees.
My one and only serious gripe was the poorly explained Bosley replacement (Bernie Mac) – just bad casting.
While I think about it, another really bad character, is the guy who plays the villainous Irishman (I don’t know his name and am happy to keep it that way) he has to have the worst Irish accent EVER and he just had zero screen presence for what should have been a very strong character.
The story, what there was of it, is that a bunch of baddies have contrived to acquire the list of witness protection candidates which were stupidly stored on rings worn by two high up characters in the US security services. Of course the Angels are hired to recover the rings and return them to their rightful place. That’s it really. But that certainly isn’t all there is with regard to the rest of the film.
Matrix-like special effects abound, all done in high heels of course!!. Our intrepid trio take on any number of burly and beastly adversaries and of course win out every time without even breaking a nail.
For pure unbelievable action, you will appreciate the dirt bike scene where the girls are chasing king baddie, who manages to turn round mid leap and fire off several shots at them from not one but two automatics while keeping complete control of his bike. Who does the baddie turn out to be? None other than………………………..watch the film if you really care!!
Second prize for ridiculous stunt is the section where Lucy Lui is careering down a hill on a glorified skateboard in pursuit of another baddie in a Maserati – naturally she catches him and manages to listen to his phone conversation knobble his car to boot, all without being noticed by said baddie. All way too mad, but who cares.
The soundtrack was very good, all appropriate and similar to the first film – more like a music video than a feature film, that might be something to do with the director McG cutting his teeth in that genre. The soundtrack did overpower the dialogue sometimes. That said, the dialogue was so awful it didn’t really matter.
Cameos by Bruce Willis and Pink need looking out for and the appearance of Demi Moore as an ex- Angel gone bad is a sight for sore eyes – she still looks great.
John Cleese turns up as Lucy Liu’s dad in a less than convincing way and sadly adds nothing to the film, I think Cleese is a genius, but this role is just WRONG.
So, do you need to see this film? If you are going to tutt at me for saying yes because you found the story and script weak, the stunts and effects un-believable, then don’t bother.
If you are offended by the 1970’s style image of these super chicks and their antics – don’t bother.
If you like silly, fast action, fast car / bike, bullet dodging gymnastics – get on the internet and book your ticket now.
After all my critisism I liked the film, do I need therapy? can anyone help??
