The angels are back, and this time their heels are twice as high, their outfits twice as revealing, and the plot twice as unbelievable. But that is the beauty of the Charlie's Angels, once you get past the obvious unbelievability of the entire thing, you're in for the ride of your life. If you thought the first film was action packed and fast-paced, you really ain't seen nothin' yet! This is a sequel, but there's no real need to see the first film to explain anything, unsurprisingly, this film doesn't centre around a complicated plot and deep character analysis. Though it does have a plot, it's not too hard to follow. Anything you need to know from the first film is revisted and explained again. Though I would recommend watching the first just to see how they've 'evolved' with this movie. And to see Cameron doing her butt dance.
As Charlie says, "once upon a time there were three very different girls......"
Dylan (Drew Barrymore), Natalie (Cameron Diaz) and Alex (Lucy Liu) make up the Charlie's Angels, a trio of crime-fighting private investigators who work for the absent Charlie, a millionnaire who funds the Angels, but whom nobody has ever met. He contacts the girls via Bosley, a kind of generic, stupid male presence, just for the sake of it. In the first film, Bosley was played by Bill Murray. But he's absent in this film (rumour has it he and Lucy Liu didn't get on...) so his even more incompetent brother appears in this film, played by Bernie Mac (who you might remember from Oceans 11). He takes up the 'weirdy stupid comedy man' role that was fulfilled in the first film by Tom Green ("The Chad was great..."). The basic plot? Someone has stolen two titanium rings from members of the US government. But these aren't any old rings, they contain encrypted data giving the identities and addresses of everyone in the witness protection program. The data can only be read when the rings are put together. So it's down to the Angels to find out who's behind it all, bring 'em down and protect the innocent (which includes a 15 year old boy whom Bosley takes under his wing, and a certain Angel with a past......) All this and they have to have perfect hair and make-up, the latest trendy clothes (never a tear in sight) and the most impractical shoes in the world.
One of the good things about the plot in this film is that even though this is a no-brainer action movie, they haven't just gone for that 'he's the bad buy, now lets spend the whole film chasing him' easy way out. There's more than one string to the story, more than one bad guy, and though it does have more than a slight resemblance to the first (Dylan falls for the baddie, there's a sexy older woman who wants to kill the angels, Alex and Natalie have boyfriend problems...) it's still a nice twisting & turning thread to compliment the numerous disguises, action sequences and funky eyeliner. In the space of an hour and a half, we see the girls as Hot Dog vendors, Bikers, Surfers, Pussycat Dolls Dancers, Murder Scene Investigators, runaways and much more besides. Old strings from the first film are followed up - the boyfriends are back (which is nice for Matt Le Blanc / Luke Wilson fans), we see Natalie save the day once again with her amazing knowledge of bird trivia, and Dylan obsesses over her stars & stripes lighter. And the creepy thin guy is back. Why, exactly, I'm not sure. That was the one piece of the story that wasn't properly explained. It's not exactly brain surgery, but what did you expect from a Charlie's Angels movie?
I think this is the kind of film you instantly know if you'll like or not, just from the trailor, It definitely doesn't appeal to everyone, but if you're like me and love impossible plots, fast action, great clothes and good looking people, then you'll definitely enjoy it. I would quite happily watch it again. The pace was so fast one minute you'd sat down with your popcorn, the next Pink's latest single was signalling the end credits. Somehow, despite a plethora of uneccessary tits and ass, revealing clothing and deliberate innuendo, I came out thinking "how cute are those girls?" and not feeling like they were traitors to women for exploiting themselves. That's a good sign, because they were crossing a fine line many a time! The thing is, they may dress up as strippers and Swedish maids, but they also kick ass, save the world and never break a nail. What better role model could a girl ask for? Ooh, and look out for the classic line from Cameron Diaz to Luke Wilson - "You were the cock? I was the beaver..."
If that doesn't make you want to see the film, I don't know what will.
