This is a children’s film, yet whenever it’s on I always try to watch it. Why, you may ask considering I am a 20-year-old female. Surely I have better things to do with my time? Well I have thought about this and I think it is partly from watching this as a child so it brings back good memories. However watching this film is far more than a trip down memory lane for me. Watched as an adult you can read far more into it and it is actually a very disturbing look at human nature. I’m obviously not the only one who feels this way as Marilyn Manson actually uses a rhyme from the film as an intro to one of his songs.
The basic story ~~~~~~~~
An eccentric chocolate-making millionaire, Willy Wonka, decides to let people into his factory for the first time. These lucky people will all be people with one friend, who have found a golden ticket inside a Wonka chocolate bar. Great marketing strategy eh! Once inside this factory the children with adults find a fantasy world, with eye-candy as well as real candy everywhere they look. However in this world of dreams temptation gets the better of the children and adults one by one, and they break the rules Wonka laid down before they entered the building. Once they have broken a rule, each reflecting an aspect of human nature (it’s a bit like a children’s’ version of the film Seven!), they are taken off by Wonka’s strange workers and not seen till the end of the film. In the end only one child and adult remain. However they have also broken a rule, but got away with it earlier during the film. Will they get away with it now? What are Wonka’s hidden motives for letting these people into his factory and home? And why does he employ Oompa Lumpas instead of regular workers? Well that would be telling, you’ll just have to watch the film!
Would you like this film? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This film can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Children will love the visual aspects (so long as they can get past the fact that it looks slightly dated now), and the thoughts it conjures – such as having a room entirely made of candy! There are also some catchy songs during the film, although this is not a musical. It also has a nice story with a happy ending, yet is not an entirely ‘nice’ film, which gives it an edge. Therefore I would not recommend letting young children, e.g. under 8 or so watch it as they may find odd moments scary.
But why should you watch it as an adult? And what will you get out of it?
I think that for an adult to enjoy it it does require a certain personality type and frame of mind possibly. If you enjoy the weird and wonderful then this will fit the bill. It is a bit like Beetlejuice regarding how unlikely some of the things in it are to happen, but less scary. If you hated Beetlejuice because it was too weird then you will probably hate this film. If you hate films that seem a bit dated then be warned this does look a bit out of date when compared with the special affects we are used to today.
If you want a bit of light relief then this is worth a watch. It is not a serious film (although it does have serious meanings behind it). And is best watched when you want a bit of light entertainment (or perhaps when you’ve had a few too many as I can imagine it could seem very trippy then – not that I’m talking from personal experience here!)
If you watched this as a child it is worth another look to see just what you were actually watching!!!
