Advantages Advantages Good action set pieces

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Overdone the gore

Not many of the so called 'Sword and Sandal' epics are renowned for their historical accuracy and Centurion is no exception although since it deals with the story of the disappearance of the famous Roman ninth legion which is still a mystery they can take more liberties with the facts. The 'Legio IX Hispana' stationed in Roman Britain is said to have disappeared from the known records around AD 117. This has lead to many theories as to what happened to this army and 'Centurion' examines the once popular theory that the legion was massacred by a Pict uprising north of where Hadrian's Wall was ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor writing and direction and a lack of originality.

Northern Britain in the First Century AD is a tough place to be a Roman centurion, under constant threat of attack from the savage Pictish tribes. Quintus marches north with his comrades of the legendary Ninth Legion, under the command of General Virilus, intent on annihilating the Picts. But when they are ambushed and Virilus is captured, Quintus finds himself struggling to keep his platoon alive behind enemy lines. Pursued by the relentless Picts over harsh terrain, the band of soldiers race to rescue their general and reach the safety of the Roman frontier. Whatever happened to writer ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent setting, story and acting, great story and effects

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some very gruesome fighting scenes

It is 117 AD and the Romans are trying to conquer Northern Britain, unfortunately they are coming up against the Picts who are not willing to let them take their land. It is the Roman 7th Legion who are left to try and fight them off, they are headed by General Virilus and a sole survivor of the raid on the battle fort Quintus Dias. The men are tricked and led into a trap where the whole legion gets wiped out with the exception of 5 men, they are the only men left who now face the last of freeing the General and trying to fight for the land or make it to safety. Just can these men fight off ... more

Advantages Advantages simple, straight-forward and quite realistic story

Disadvantages Disadvantages a bit on the dull side between the brutal fights

(film-only review)Britain, 117AD: the Roman invasion of the country remains stalled when it comes to the far north, what will eventually be Scotland (yay!). The native Picts aren't happy about the intruders, obviously, but rather than pitch an all-out battle - something that would play to the Roman strengths - they hold off the interlopers with swooping, hit'n'run attacks. One successful raid on a Roman frontier fort (not as sturdy in the film as my history lessons would have had, but far more realistic!) leaves Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender - 300, Inglorious Basterds) the only survivor ... more

    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Bloody, raw action that fills most of the running time, fine cast

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unnecessary, awkward romance

Is it acceptable to recommend great trash? Probably, since the likes of "American Pie," "Eagle Eye," and "Charlie's Angels" have proven themselves to be hugely entertaining and popular over the years. Great trash as in, the film is either full of laugh-out-loud, gross-out, hilarious moments or it's filled with fast-paced, exciting, blood-soaked action, neither of which is supported by a decent plot, or any character depth. With "Centurion," it's the latter. Pauline Kael, a famous American film critic once wrote: "The movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash, we ... more
