Let me start this review by stating that I have sang and danced since I was 5 years old, and therefore have a passionate enthusiasm for any dancing films and shows!!!
Therefore taking this into consideration, I have tried to be as open minded as possible about my review on this...
~THE STORY~ Center Stage, the story about a group of young dancers joining the ABC (American Ballet Company). The story starts with a brief bit about their audition to the company, Leaving their girlfriends 'back home', doing so against parents wishes, auditioning and not really wanting it etc... then they all start 'class' and the new group takes shape.
The story (not that there really is much of one) takes us on the journey, of their successes in class, the worry about whether they are good enough, of course a love story.... a girls first love with the arrogant male lead, the other girl with the pushy mum and an eating disorder...
Through the year of training each has to prove themsleves to the nasty head teacher in order to see if, out of the entire year - about 30 people - who is accepted into the 'company'. Meaning who will be selected to be in the New York Performing Ballet... they want 3 girls and 3 boys...
All builds up to the final end of term show where their fate will be decided... (I shan't spoil the end - probably the best part in terms of storyline!)
~THE DANCING~ For anyone who is a fan of musicals or dancing, I thought I would include my opinions here.... I think the dancing is amazing. The film is full of dancing ranging from Ballet (obvioulsy), Jazz (An amazing jazz class that I long to attend!!), contemporary, and also a dirty dancing type salsa!!
The final end of year show is a real show stopper, with the modern day ballet story... I loved it.
~OVERALL~ I would say if you like dancing, singing, theatre, shows etc, and you have an opportunity to watch this, I say do it... Why not!
If you are not into watching dancing and do not appreciate that 39 fouette turns on pointe is amazing, steer clear! You'll be totally bored.
Hope this is helpful Hayley.
