I went to my local video shop to rent the film “ what women want” but it wasn’t available uhhh don’t you just hate that! I saw this film and thought that I would give this a go, the back cover made it look and sound very interesting. There aren’t really any well-known actors in this film but there are a lot of talented young dancers in it who I would love to be seeing more of in the future.
To up it in a nutshell, This film is basically about teenagers struggling to reach their dream in life and in this case it is to be a famous ballet dancer.
The film begins by showing you hundreds of teenage boys and girls all auditioning for a place in the American Ballet Academy in New York. Only 12 young hopefuls can be picked out of them all to go to this school.
THE PLOT
Jodie and her friend Eve get a place in the American Ballet school and become good friends. Jodie and Eve are put in to the same room also with another girl called Marie. The ballet school is the best dance school in New York and the competition is high. The teachers are tough and they make the students work very hard.
The film focuses on Jodie more then any other character; she is a very pretty girl but is not the best of dancers. Eve has got a bad attitude, she is an excellent dancer but she seems to walk around with a chip on her shoulder. Marie is one of the best dancers in the school; she is the envy of many of the other girls.
Jodie thinks that she as found love when she starts sleeping with her choreographer, however he is just playing the field and breaks Jodie's heart. (Nice try though) Jodie is a smart girl she picks herself up and gets over her fling with him and concentrates on her dancing.
During the film Marie meets a boy and falls in love, her priorities change and she realises that dancing isn’t her dream at all. Her mother has pushed her all her life to be a dancer. Marie starts to suffer with bulimia, she has been making herself ill and worn-out trying to live up to the expectations of her mother.
This film doesn’t have much of a plot so if I have been brief then it is because most of the other parts of the story are not really worth mentioning as the points that I have mentioned are all the key factors in this film
CONCLUSION
I think that many young teenagers would like this film but I didn’t think that it was that good to be honest. If you are a ballet fan then this film is for you. I do like ballet myself but I like a good storyline to go with it and this film just didn’t seem to have the storyline to grasp my attention and make me want to keep watching the screen with interest. If you don’t like dancing then I would definitely advise you to give this film a miss, you wouldn’t enjoy this film much at all. The dancing scenes make the film, they are really good, this film is made up of pure talent and excellent dancing skills. The story line was really poor indeed; it let the whole film down, which is a shame because the film started off with such potential. The film started slow but I thought that it would pick up a bit but it failed to keep me focused and so it then started to drag on a little. The last 20 minutes is the best part out of the whole film because it shows you all of the students dancing in a ballet performance on stage, depending on how well they perform at this show will determine whether or not they will make it into the company. The soundtrack is really good and it makes some of the dancing scenes really come alive. If you are thinking of renting this video then don’t expect to much from it, the dancing scenes are great, if that is the kind of thing that you like, but that’s about it.
£1,99 from my local video shop to rent. 12 cert
