Advantages: Fantastic, frenetic, creative, unique Disadvantages: none, stands up to repeat viewings and is in all ways perfect!
...Apocalyptica are always going to be compared to Mettalica. Their name isn't a coincidence. this quartet of Classically trained musicians cut their names into the metal history books with their interpretations of Mettallica classics. This is no mere covers band however, here all "traditional" instruments from the metal spectrum go out the window, replaced instead with 4 Cellos (complemented live by an incredible session drummer). Vocals are gone as well, the haunting string work at times though tempting the listener into creating lyrics.
This Live DVD is an excellent package. Featuring a two hour, twenty song, live concert (recorded in Germany). Both the classic 'Tallica tunes the band became famous for are featured, as well as their own, more classical inspired output. (and the last track is the well known "Hall of the Mountain King", 5...

Advantages: Shows joyful side of tragic Du Pré; invaluable performances; entertaining spots. Disadvantages: Too short, unfocused, worshipful; expensive for 1 hour film.
...and surprise.
Backstage just before a performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1969, the camera catches five young musicians (whose powerhouse combined talent could easily launch a spaceship) all horsing around--they exchange instruments and Du Pré plays a little violin 'cello-style--with hilarious results. Du Pré is joined here by Barenboim, Pinchas Zukerman and Itzhak Perlman. Shortly afterwards, the film shows them onstage, performing Schubert's Quintet (aka 'The Trout').
Rehearsing duos with her beloved 'cello teacher, William Pleeth, Du Pré exudes a natural joyfulness in her playing. That they shared a mutual admiration and warm friendship is in abundant evidence. Pleeth reminisces about his interesting first meetings with the teen cellist. He also recalls how she played from memory a couple of new, difficult pieces after studying them...

Advantages: Brilliant Songs played Solo.....sort of... Disadvantages: No Flying Pigs...
...Itself.....
So, we see David Gilmour strumming a few practice chords, and then playing the unmistakeable introduction to Shine on you Crazy Diamond, a tune just about all Pink Floyd fans will know well, and have in their collection, its also a very moody piece of music too, played like this, it also shows how versatile Gilmour is as a musician as he skillfully moves from one chord sequence to another with ease, when the vocals do come in we are in full flow of the song and its so refreshing to hear it played like this, and it sets the mood for the whole DVD really, all very laid back, atmospheric and beautifully played...No special effects needed here.........Not a Flying Pig in Sight.....
So I shall now brielfy review the rest of the songs on the DVD.
Terrapin..... is next, which is a very old Syd Barrett song, and once again Gilmour does...
