Now Holly has her own DVD player, we thought it was about time we got her some DVDs to play in it. One of the first DVDs that we purchased was some episodes from her favourite television channel, Cbeebies, which is a BBC channel, available on satellite and Free view, and is aimed at pre-school age children although I think it appeals more to toddlers than anyone else. The channel is quite educational even though a lot of the programmes are animated. It is very good at teaching children from an early age, how to be green by recycling, grow your own vegetables, using less water when cleaning you teeth and generally how to be fit and healthy. They incorporate into the programmes counting and colours, it does a spring and autumn watch, there is a programme on the channel that looks at special children and teaches sign language. The channel is very good all round entertainment for youngsters.
The DVD is called Get Set Go, which is the name of the breakfast part of the channel. It is presented by Sid and Andy and is on from 6 am until 9.00 am every morning. This part is very upbeat to get young children set up for the day.
The DVD begins with some funky music accompanied by some brief clips of a lot of the programmes that are available to watch on the channel.
The DVD contains the following episodes:
Boogies Beebies - Sporty Boogie
The episode starts with a bit of a dance as a warm up. The episode tells children all about track and field sporting events. It turns a few basic exercises including star jumps into dance moves and this is all put to some music. The basic moves are the chorus. The events covered are hurdles, discus, speed walking and the triple jump. All of the moves from these events are put together to make a bit of a dance and a song is sung by presenter Pete Hillier about all the sports shown in the programme This is a great episode as it shows children doing the dance moves. The programme ends with a few slow moves as a cool down. Holly loves this programme and stands and tries to do all the moves and even gets me to sometimes join in sometimes.
Charlie and Lola - I am really, really, really concentrating.
This episode is about sports days at school. Lola the younger sister of Charlie, is seeing what events she wants to participate in for the sports day. She tries a three legged event with her friend Lotta, but falls over, Leap Frogs, but that's no good , an obstacle race but she just goes off on a tangent. Lola eventually settles on the egg and spoon race and spends a day practising but the egg keeps dropping off the spoon so eventually she sticks the egg onto the spoon. Charlie tells Lola that this is cheating and all she needs to do is concentrate through the race and then she wont drop the egg. Lola concentrates so hard on not dropping the egg that she comes last in the race but wins a rosette for not dropping her egg. This is not really a high energy programme but is quite fun to watch.
Me Too - Sports Day
This programme is set in a city called Riverseafingal and has Granny Murray, who is a child milder. This episode concentrates on the local schools sports day. The Teacher Micky John is trying to arrange the sports day but it wont stop raining. When he drops his daughter off with Granny Murray she gives Micky John some advice "Just wait for a break in the clouds and all will be fine". Various people turn up at the school including Bobby, the very sporty bus cleaner, who teaches Micky John some gymnastic moves. Eventually there is a break in the clouds so Micky John rushes around to set all the sports day equipment up. There are some songs in this but again this is more an episode for watching and not really for joining in.
The Large Family - The Big Race
The Large Family are an animated family of elephants living in houses like you and me. The very fit neighbour Mrs Smart is rather rude to the very unfit Mrs Large, so their children set up a race between the two mums. The kids concentrate on getting mum fit for the race by taking her keys in the morning and making her walk them to school, they then need help with a dance class and a football match. Mrs Large then realises that it is fun getting fit so she ropes the whole family into getting fit. The day of the race comes (two laps around the local park) but Mrs Smart cheats and uses a scooter to get around the park but gets found out. Another episode just for watching and not really taking part.
Tweenies- Fast and Slow
Bella, Jake, Milo and Fizz sing and dance around and is a great episode for kids to copy. Its teaches children all about going fast with some of the songs, a fast patta cake game, then Milo and Bella start playing with fast remote control cars. Jake then gets upset when Fizz calls him the slowest Tweenie, so Jake goes outside to play on his own and finds a snail, so he sings a song about the slow snail. All of them then sit down with their teacher Max to learn all about fast and slow animals. They then all take part in telling the story of the Tortoise and the Hare. Holly loves this episode and has a good sing and dance around the lounge when it is on.
Lazy Town - Sports Day.
Sportacus, the superhero of Lazy Town realises it sports day and sets about getting all the lazy residents to become healthy and fit. The Mayor clears the sports field for the town to use it and the residents start playing with a ball but then Robbie Rotten, the resident baddie, spots them and sets about ruining everything for them. Robbie stops the playful games by saying he owns the sports field but challenges the residents to a relay race and if Robbie wins he will build on the field and Sportacus, Robbie's enemy will have to leave town forever. The residents don't want this to happen, so set about getting fit. Sportacus advises the kids to eat some sports candy (fruit) to give them energy. Sportacus tells the children about how bad sugar is and shows them that eating fruit will give you more energy than eating sweets. This is a great way for getting your little ones to eat more fruit. Just call it the sports candy from Lazy Town and of course they will eat it. Robbie Rotten cheats all the way through the race but Sportacus wins in the end by eating an apple to give him the extra energy.
Little Robots - Good Sport Sporty
Sporty Robot has finished all his jobs but is still full of energy so sets about helping all the other robots with their jobs but all the other robots take advantage of him and sporty ends up overloading himself then everybody feels guilty. Tiny Robot rebuilds Sporty and tell him he needs to rest and relax for a while but sporty still wants to do his exercises. Tiny then comes up with the idea, because sporty helped all the other robots with their jobs, they should do sporty's exercises for him. Another programme that is just for watching.
Higgledy House - Fitness
This episode stars Justin Fletcher (my daughters favourite person) and Sarah Jane Honeywell doing exercises in the garden. As normal Sarah Jane is much better than Justin at this.
Koala Brothers - Georges Big Race
George the Postman Tortoise (the slowest member of the Australian homestead) and Archie the cocky sporty Crocodile (the fastest member of the homestead) are talked into taking part in a race by other members of the homestead. George is rather worried about taking part in the race because he is so slow and thinks he can't beat cocky Archie but Frank and Buster (the Koala Brothers) tell George, that if he keeps going at a slow and steady pace he will win the race. The race starts with Archie setting off as fast as lightening and George starts plodding off with his bag of supplies (some Bananas). A refreshment stall has been set up with some water and a cake so Archie stops to have a piece of cake or three. About ¾ of the way through the race Archie has worn himself out and decides to have a bit of a nap and because he is so far in front of George he thinks he has nothing to worry about however whilst Archie is asleep George overtakes him, Archie wakes up and realises he is in a race and starts running again but it is too late. So George the plodder won. At the end of the programme it tells children that if you keep on going and never give up you can do almost anything.
Balamory - Fun Run.
Balamory is an Island off the Scottish Coast and is set round Miss Hoolie who is the Nursery School Teacher, Pocket and Sweet, the local shop and cafe owners, PC Plum, the Policeman, Spencer the Decorator, Edie McReadie, the bus driver, Josie Jump the sporty person and Archie the inventor. Josie wants to run in the fun run but can't because she has to start the race so is looking for PC Plum to see if he can start it. Nobody knows where PC Plum has got to and a lot of people are wearing costumes ready for the fun run so Josie can't find him. Josie gives up looking but then realises she needs something loud to start the race, so sets of to see Edie to see if she has got an horn, Edie offers to start the run so Josie can take part. The fun run is won by a rabbit who turns out to be PC Plum.
Extras
The Get Set Go Song.
Sid's Sports.
This takes a brief look at Martial Arts, Football, Rugby, Gymnastics and Tennis
It covers three steps of sports, step one - warm up, step two - master the basics, step three -enjoy yourself. Have fun, be healthy and make friends.
I tend to play this DVD for Holly on a Monday and Thursday afternoon after my session at the Gym and her session at the crèche. She has had her nap in the car whilst driving home and by 2 o'clock mother is flaking out and just wants to sit down with a cup of tea but of course Holly is rejuvenated from her nap and is rearing to go. Holly watches the DVD, copies the dances and sings along to the music, so she is quite happy with this and also works up an appetite for dinner so everybody is happy.
You can either select to play the programmes in the above order, play the programmes in a random order or select a certain programme and have subtitles for the programmes.
The DVD is 155 minutes long and is rated U so is suitable for everybody.
This DVD is available in most entertainment shops and the recommended retail price is £9.99. We got ours from Tesco and paid about £8.00 but is only £6.98 at Amazon.
