One of THE worst things you can say about a film is that "It's alright", that is to say, it's not brilliant, and it's not sufficiantly offensive for you to hate it, it just provokes you into apathy and general shrugging of shoulders and contorting of face.
Cats and Dogs is one of those "alright" films, its aimed at kids, but fails to engage tham, it tries a bit to appeal to parents, but not very hard, its got Jeff Goldblum in it, but barely...
The film is about the age old conflict between, yes you guessed it, Cats and Dogs, apparently ages ago the cats ruled the earth, and the dogs saved mankind from cat slavery and then took theri place as man's best bud. The cats are planning a comeback, masterminded by the marvellous Mr Tiddles (By far the best character in the film, and very funny), a fluffy big cat with a Dr Evil (Austin Powers villian) persona.
The cats are trying to stop a professor (Mr Goldblum) from finishing a formula that will cure all allergies to Dogs, and an inexperianced pup is accidently sent in to protect the Prof and his family instead of the crack secret agent dog that should have gone in.
The film then revolves around various Cat attacks on the house, and then on the dogs saving the Prof and his young son and wife from a warehouse where the Cats have them.
Another brilliant bit is the Cat Ninjas that appear as the first assault on the house, they are very well realised and very funny, but are not nearly enough to save the film from being luke warm. Particularly bad is the boy/dog relationship between the Profs son and the Pup (Lou), its cloying, sentimental and in no way reflects the type of youngster that exists in todays world. My jaded children were heard to say "uuurrrghh" as the boy rolled in soft focus with his pup around a meadow accompanied by chamber music.
The mice at the end of the film are alright too, but three moments of mirth in an hour and a half are three thimbles of water on a 150 mile desert trek, just not good enough!
So get it on vid for the kids if you must, but avoid if you can.
Not great, not awful, It's alright.

I did not realise that the plot was so thin. I was tempted by this film and if the toddler was younger would have took her to see it., but knowing the story makes me think... nah.
Good review, Mr Raybid.
