Well we’ve had talking sheep, pigs and more, so now it’s the turn of the family pets to amuse you, the Cats and dogs.
I saw the film advertised on TV and from the bits I saw was intrigued enough to actually pay a visit to the local cinema,( well if you can call it that!), to see it.
Cats and dogs is Lawrence Gutermans four-legged family adventure, a film rich in computer trickery that will leave almost anyone fooled.
The Story:
The film gets off to a belting start with some typical cartoon caper style dog chases cat action, this ends up with the cat high up a tree and the dog pulling the branch down to catapult the cat high into the sky!.
At first this takes a few minutes to work out that this was not by accident but a cunning pussy plan.
You see in this film the cats of the world are pure evil, and are waging a violent war on the dogs. The cats are cunning and will stop at nothing
, even capable of murdering their canine opponents. The reason for this becomes apparent, the cats mission is to stop a ground-breaking allergy vaccine being created, this would stop humans being allergic to dogs and mean that they would soon take over cats in the popularity scales.
The head Pussy is the evil Mr Tinkles, a psychotic white Persian , the most grumpy ,ugly looking cat you have ever seen , with an attitude to match. Mr Tinkles certainly will not stop at anything to fight his cause.
Now for your canine star, Lou the cute puppy who completely by accident ends up at the home of the Brody’s, Professor Brody being the scientist who is responsible for the allergy breakthrough. The poor puppy suddenly becomes responsible for protecting the allergy cure from the terrifying felines.
He is aided by various other dogs, one being his neighbour Butch, a top spy dog who’s headquarters are his kennel, packed with enough equipment and computers to make NASA look bare!.
Both species of animals here are of course highly intelligent, being able to not only talk but also operate technical equipment and fool the humans along the way.
The film itself is fast paced, hardly ever a dull moment, enhanced by scenes such as the Ninja cats attack Lou with various complex kung foo style moves!. Lots more action right through to the final confrontation between the cats and dogs but it does somehow seem to drag it out rather and you get sick of waiting for the end battle!
Violence:
The worrying undertone here is the actual violence, although you sit there laughing at the misfortunes of these animals, when you think about it, should children be laughing at a dog running into a glass patio door, or a cat being catapulted feet into the air or even a Russian assassin cat attacking the dogs with knives and exploding spike balls.
Of course as in all films of this kind, the animals never get hurt, they just jump up and off they go, but is it really a good lesson for young children? I’m not sure myself…
Cast:
Well the only human star of this film is Jeff Goldblum, as the professor, not exactly one of his most demanding roles I’m afraid but he does the job in hand and gets away with it.
Other cast members are:
Elizabeth Perkins – Mrs Brody Alexander Pollock – Scott Brody
Animal voices:
Tobey Maguire – Lou Alec Baldwin – Butch Sean Hayes – Mr Tinkles
The film itself also manages to squeeze in some family values along the way, with the professor spending all his time on his allergy cure and neglecting his son, of course Lou and various other pending situations can all change this…
Really this film is aimed at the child in us, it’s good funny family viewing and rated PG. It will make you laugh and the expressions of the cats and dogs are priceless.
However don’t go expecting some complex story as it just doesn’t happen, in fact as soon as the film gets underway any adult will have worked out the plot and the ending too.
However if your bored and fancy some easy fun viewing then pop along to your cinema now, even if just to marvel at the computer wizardry. Around 1 hour 40 minutes in length, so get plenty of popcorn and your sorted!
