With all the hype around surrounding this movie, I thought I’d pop along to the local Ster Century and give it a look. I had seen the trailers and being a typical girlie, they grabbed my attention – I like anything cute and fluffy! The only really famous person who actually appears in the flesh in this movie is Jeff Goldblum, so nothing to really attract movie buffs there!
Storyline --------- I won’t go into this too much as to be honest it didn’t really have much of a storyline! But it focused around the fact that this bloke, Professor Brody (Goldblum), was searching for a cure for dog allergies. This guy has his chemistry lab under his suburban family home – quite normal?!? The particularly nauseating wife brings home a pup for their equally nauseating son. If Brody finds the right formula then this would mean that people would all start to have dogs (instead of cats?) as pets. Then doggy domination takes over the world blah blah…
Believe it or not, the doggy and pussy population actually talks, or so this film made out! The cat population gets to hear about the possibility of the allergy cure and all hell breaks out. The Brody’s pup (called Lou for Loser, voiced by Tobey Maguire) becomes involved with the rest of the neighborhood’s canine gang and there you have it; a bit of Tom and Jerry situation but with cats and dogs taking over the roles.
Vomit Inducing Parts -------------------- I don’t suppose you need to read any further to actually realise I wasn’t overly keen on this film. The nauseating American family really irritated me throughout the film – not just their accents but also their pure niceness (pass the bucket!). The kid had the typical basin bowl haircut, freckles and whiney accent. Jeff Goldblum didn’t do any favours for himself with the particularly weak part that he played.
The dogs didn’t have particularly strong characters but maybe this is how they were supposed to be portrayed – the pup was just a doggy version of the kid – a whiney voice with a sickening niceness to him!
The Good Bits ------------- Believe it or not, there were a few! The white Persian pussy, Mr Tinkles was superb, so too was his partner in crime (although I’m not too sure what he was called!). Their facial expressions were fantastic and I have a great deal of praise for however was involved in the computer generation side of this film! The maids in the film were quite good as well, and made you smirk at the end with the dresses (watch it and you’ll know what I am on about!). The Ninja Turtle-type moves were also very cleverly generated but didn’t really have me on the edge of my seat!
Conclusion ---------- I don’t really know what else to write about this film as not a lot really happened! I haven a clue what the soundtrack was like, so it can’t have been that impressive! I would recommend that you see this film if you haven’t anything else better to do as the animation and facial expressions of the animals involved makes it really worth seeing. The storyline is weak and won’t have you begging for more (no Cats & Dogs 2 please!). I could have walked out of the cinema at any point during the film, gone home and wouldn’t have been too bothered about it (boredom probably kept me there!).
I would recommend taking youngsters to see it (8-14 year olds will love it) – as the animation is quite magical, and they will probably appreciate the story and the humour much more than someone older. Save the cash and if you must, rent the video (at least you can switch it off if it becomes too brain numbingly dull for you!!). An average film that has got me hoping that they do not bring out a sequel!!!
