I've owned Cats and Dogs for over 4 years and over that time have watched it on numerous occasions, and this review was originally posted under a former username. It has now been subjected to a much-needed update.
Cats and Dogs is a film for all ages, despite the wafer thin plot that revolves around the struggle between good and evil. Good being mankind and our canine friends whilst evil has taken the form of cute cuddly cats that talk!
An evil cat called Mr Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes) has a vision of a better world, one where he himself is supreme ruler, with cats firmly at the top of the food chain and in total dominance of the human race. However, on the road to global domination Mr Tinkles and his army of cats face stiff opposition from a secret organisation of dogs hell bent upon stopping his fiendish master plan.
The story is based in suburban USA Where Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) has been developing a serum to protect people against dog allergies. The secret dog organisation, knowing the importance of this research to their kind send their top agents Butch (voiced by Alec Baldwin), Sam (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan) and Peek (voiced by Joe Pantoliano) to protect the professor, his family and his research against the evil cats. Without going into too much detail and spoiling the film, one of the agents currently in the house with the family is abducted at the start of the film and replaced (by accident) with Lou (voiced by Toby Maguire), a young, inexperienced puppy.
We then follow the story of how the cats try to destroy the research laboratory using various methods including my favourites, The Russian and Ninja Cats. The resulting story ensures laughs from all ages and giggles all the way to the end even though the ending is pretty predictable from about 10 minutes into the film.
As it's quite tricky under normal circumstances to get cats and dogs to talk. Getting them to do it in front of camera and getting them to remember their lines must be a nightmare, therefore the director Lawrence Guterman chose to use large amounts of CGI throughout the film. This was done to great effect with the actual animation used on the animals during dialogue appears flawless and exceptionally lifelike. Although there are a few glitches with the voiceovers there aren't that many to spoil the effect of the film.
Taking into account the large amount of dialogue between both the dogs and the cats, the special effects can't be knocked and I can't therefore be too overly critical. In some scenes (especially the ninja cats) the special effects are breathtaking.
Where I am going to be overly critical is the performance of the human actors. They were shallow, lacked depth, characterisation, and did not do anything to bond with the viewer. In one scene the family are in mortal danger and I was actually hoping they would actually die! Wooden would be a little harsh, but it's a close description of how they come across. Whilst Jeff Goldblum is his usual bumbling self, the spouse (played by Elizabeth Perkins) and son (played by Alexander Pollock) couldn't act their way out of a paper bag in my opinion.
Overall, I'd rate the film four stars. It's basically a film aimed at a younger audience, but it does have jokes throughout that would only be picked up by adults.
Although it has faults Cats and Dogs was actually very entertaining and I have watched it more than once over the past 3 years. Personally it is very rare that I will go back to a film once I've watched it once but Cats and Dogs is an old favourite that ultimately when bored I will flick on and let myself be entertained without having to think too much. Some scenes are very cute; some are just damn funny with one-liners that had me in stitches at times.
If the film alone doesn't sound like it's enough to convince you to purchase the DVD then take a look at the extra's available. They are brilliant and in my opinion make this one of the best DVD's in my collection (and it's a big collection).
As you play the DVD you have the choice of selecting either Cats or Dogs. Each option takes you off to different menus, but basically, the extra's are:
Directors Commentary HBO Documentaries x 2 Trailers Cinema trailer Casting Couch Cast List Scene Selection Storyboard
As shown above, the DVD extras contain the standard cast list, scene selection and trailers but the extras that make this well worth purchasing are the HBO documentaries, the casting couch and storyboard. The documentaries form part of the "making of" style of programme showing how the animals used in the film were trained and performed during filming. In addition it also shows how the CGI was generated, the level of detail that was used to ensure that movements were conveyed correctly.
The casting couch had me rolling around laughing. Taking the character of Mr Tinkles they showed him in different guises auditioning for various rolls and doing impressions. This lasted for 15 minutes and is one of the extras I do watch over and over again. Even though it is clear that it is entirely created using CGI, it looks incredibly realistic.
The storyboard follows the producer, director and scriptwriters as they move from the concept stage to producing the storyboards, meeting the CGI operators through to the final editing stage of production with an insight and commentary into why certain scenes were cut from the final version of the film.
My copy of Cats & Dogs was a gift but I have seen it on offer in most high street retailers for between £5.99 and £10 and at that price is can only be:
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Advantages: Funny, excellent effects. Disadvantages: violence to animals
...pets to amuse you, the Cats and dogs.
I saw the film advertised on TV and from the bits I saw was intrigued enough to actually pay a visit to the local cinema,( well if you can call it that!), to see it.
Cats and dogs is Lawrence Gutermans four-legged family adventure, a film rich in computer trickery that will leave almost anyone fooled.
The Story:
The film gets off to a belting start with some typical cartoon caper style dog chases cat action, ... ...see in this film the cats of the world are pure evil, and are waging a violent war on the dogs.
The cats are cunning and will stop at nothing , even capable of murdering their canine opponents.
The reason for this becomes apparent, the cats mission is to stop a ground-breaking allergy vaccine being created, this would stop humans being allergic to dogs and mean that they would soon take over cats in the popularity scales.
The head Pussy is the ...

Advantages: Very funny little film Disadvantages: Cats are evil?!!!!
...bits are the Siamese Ninja cats that are so funny; I nearly wet myself again! (I’m always doing that!!!) I loved the battle scene with them and watch out for the binoculars and parachutes!! The Russian cat is hysterical; this is the one you see in the trailers for the film, the “I think not, baby puppy” cat! He has a way with fur balls that’ll make me look twice at my two cats the next time they hack one up!! Mr Tinkles is ... ...bath!!! In fact, the cats really do steal the show big time!! (I’ll address this in a moment though!!) Other fab bits are: the look at the Dog Training Academy (oh, you’ll find out what your dog’s really doing when he’s ‘drinking’ from the toilet) and the final climactic scene with the mice (this had be holding my stomach in stitches!) All in all, “Cats and Dogs” is a great film. It’s fun, funny ...

Advantages: great charcters, cute and funny Disadvantages: the original dog doesnt return
...all know the situation about cats and dogs, they don’t like each other. If a dog sees a cat its natural reaction is to chase it. Well this film looks at the relationship the two animals have between them. It is a battle of wits and the prize being control of the world. Well that’s what the cats want anyway, the dogs just want to stay mans best friend. All apart from Butch that is who doesn’t want to get friendly with the humans.
It begins with the ... ...being allergic to dogs. The cats want to stop this, steal the formula and reverse it so that everyone will become allergic to them and have cats instead. It all went back to the days of ancient Egypt where cats would rule over the humans and treat them like dirt. The dogs over threw them becoming mans best friend with the humans in charge. The cats wanted it to be just like that again.
Lou became the new dog then, this little puppy was supposed ...

...Abby Barnes (Janeane Garofalo) is a successful radio broadcaster; her daily show "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" helps hundreds of listeners with their pet problems, from over friendly cat's too depressed goldfish. When professional photographer Brian (Ben Chaplin) phones up with a troublesome dog on roller skates, Abby duly talks him through how to calm the free wheeling dog down and out of gratitude for her good advice; Brian invites her out for drinks. Self-conscious about her appearance and being only just over 5 foot, she agrees to go out but gives Brian the description of her neighbour Noelle (Uma Thurman) a tall, slim model.
When Abby explains to Noelle about the deception, she agrees to go along with the plan to help her friend out. Brian has no idea that he is being deceived and after long romantic conversations with the witty...

...I'm not normally one for romantic films or girlie flicks but I found myself watching "The Truth about Cats and Dogs" on TV a couple of nights ago and I was rivetted!
Released in 1996, this film stars Uma Thurman as Noelle, Janeanne Garofallo as Abby and Ben Chaplin as Brian - the three main and most important characters - evryone else is just incidental! The performances of all three are tight, convincing and flawless.
The film begins with Abby, a vet with a radio talk show, being chatted up by one of her callers - Brian and eventually agreeing to meet him on a date. However her insecurity sets in, as she feels she is unattractive and that he won't like her as a 5ft 2in, plain-Jane brunette so she persueades her scatty neighbour - Noelle, to come along and pretend to be her. She feels sure he will be more enchanted by Noelle being...

Advantages: A light hearted good romantic film Disadvantages: It always makes me cry, I'm such a sap
...I hate Uma Thurman; in fact she rates up there with my other hatred Cameron Diaz. Strangely enough though, these women appear in my 2 favourite films of all time. But alas, Miss Diaz we are not talking about today, it?s Miss Thurman and in this film she gave me a bigger reason to despise her ? well if only for a little while <g>. Here?s my opinion on one of my favourite films of all time, The Truth About Cats and Dogs, Mel xxx

DVD Description
In the outrageous comedy CATS & DOGS, Professor Brody (Jeff Goldblum) is on the verge of discovering a chemical formula that would give humans immunity to dog allergies, making dogs the clear favorite of humans over cats, their age-old enemies. When a power-mad white Persian cat named Mr. Tinkles (voiced by Sean Hayes) decides to kidnap the professor and his family and attempt to reverse the formula, making all humans allergic to dogs, canine operative Butch (voiced by Alec Baldwin) and young, hapless recruit Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire) must stop Mr. Tinkles's nefarious plans. Blending live action with realistic puppetry and seamless computer animation, CATS & DOGS reveals an amusingly secretive world of talking felines and canines where cats parachute out of stealth planes in night-vision goggles and dogs operate hi-tech computer equipment. And in one of the film's most stunning sequences, a Russian mercenary kitten attacks the Brody household with an arsenal of weapons including plastic explosives and bladed boomerangs. Entertaining for both children and adults, the film also features Elizabeth Perkins and the vocal talents of Susan Sarandon, Jon Lovitz, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Joe Pantoliano.
