celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday. His two sons have returned home for the occasion: Gooper, his wife and children, Brick, an ageing football hero who has turned to drink, and his feisty wife Maggie. This is a portrayal of family tensions.

question. Paul Newman is her ex-athlete husband, Brick Pollitt, an alcoholic who frustrates and disappoints his wife and his overbearing father, Burl Ives, the vulgar patriarch of this positively Gothic Southern family whose children return to the nest like vultures when they learn he is dying of cancer. Infidelities, addictions, latent homosexuality, depression, unrequited love and mendacity are woven into this powerful adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Though it was somewhat whitewashed by Hollywood, the sentiment remains powerful due to the provocative performances. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor and Actress for Newman and Taylor. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

Advantages: Great acting performances, brilliant cinematography, good transfer of stage to screen. Disadvantages: Sometimes you are reminded it is an old film.
...And that by Maggie the cat bearing the heat for a while, she can accomplish just that.
The only downside is that from the film work and the set design you are reminded that this is a piece which was made in previous decades - but the story is transferrable to today - and should it be made today, not a lot except the quality of fil would change.

This is a well known classic, which I had never seen, but always thought I should!! It didn't disappoint as it was a well thought out screen version of Williams' play.
Elizabeth Taylor is fantastic and gives a great performance as a woman who feels her husband has judged her wrongly and is punishing her for something she didn't really do. This anger and resentment is counteracted by her passion for the man who rebuffs her advances and her compassion for Big Daddy, a dying man in ignorance of his impending death.
McQueen emotes well a man who is struggling internally with demons he is not ready to release. At times his performance is frustrating and you want to hit out yourself and tell him to crack the shell - Which just shows how involved you can get, because you are desperate to know the subtext to the interactions you can see.
One of the famous lines is - We don't live together, we just occupy the same space! The play and film centre on how Maggie tries to reunite Big Daddy with his son - but is actually about the reuniting and healing of all relationships and how death can be a strong indicator for making up for lost time - and not allowing yourself to lose that time with the people alive. Essentially its about learning how to live together and love together in the same space. And that by Maggie the cat bearing the heat for a while, she can accomplish just that.
The only downside is that from the film work and the set design you are reminded that this is a piece which was made in previous decades - but the story is transferrable to today - and should it be made today, not a lot except the quality of fil would change.
Recommended to all as a classic piece of acting, writing and film making from an original script.
This is the classic cinematic version of Tennessee Williams's breathtaking play about a crazed southern family torn apart by greed. Larger-than-life patriarch Big Daddy (Burl Ives) lays dying, and the members of his brood clamor for the inheritance. Paul Newman is Brick, the alcoholic son struggling in the shadow of his powerful father, and Elizabeth Taylor is Maggie, Brick's lingerie-clad temptress of a wife who will do anything for the love of her cold husband. Brick's younger brother, Gooper (Jack Carson), and his wife, Mae (Madeleine Sherwood), strive for Big Daddy's approval, but even though they have children and a successful marriage, Big Daddy is dedicated to Brick, a former football star with his own personal demons. Tensions mount as the family is forced together under one roof, where secrets are revealed and relationships are lost and found. Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman's performances serve as cinematic icons; the heat and hatred between them ignites the screen, fueled by Tennessee Williams's insightful and brilliant dialogue.
