When my wife suggested to me to purchase Castaway on Sky Box Office on Sunday evening, I must admit, I was a little hesitant. Do I want to sit through 2 hours and 30 minutes of a modern Robinson Crusoe? Well, I pressed the magic PURCHASE button and off we went. What a well spent bit of cash it was. Castaway features Tom Hanks as a Business Tycoon in charge of Federal Express, thats right, the company that deliver your mail to far flung destinations. He is involved with a lovely young lady to whom he intends to marry. Days before Christmas he needs to fly away on business. Well you can guess what happens mid flight??? This is one of the most dramatic air crash scenes I have ever witnessed on screen. My brother who works for an airline says that his flight crew have said in the past about the realism of that part of the film. Dont know how they would know! Its not like they have been in many crashes(i hope). It really strikes home the true horror of a crash and how puny us humans really are. Anyway, as the only survivor, alone and lonely, Tom has to start planning his survival as he is washed up on a small island. As anyone would, it begins with the thoughts of is anyone else around and where to wait for the rescue team. After days of no signs, plans are then for survival and making do with his surroundings. The crashed plane was not a passenger jet. It was a cargo plane and several packages float onto his desert Island. He collects these hoping to deliver them on his return. Anguish and distress leads him to open these where he finds the items listed in my title. All will play a part in the film. The rest of the story follows the emotions and adaption someone in his position would have to make. A very intuitive person, he seems to come up with some very clever ideas as well as making mistakes.
Does he get rescued? What is his life like without him at home. How would they react if he returned? How would he return?
all of these questions will be answered in the remaining 1 hour and 30 mins of the film which became a truly inthralling film to watch. In fact, several sub plots that almost go unoticed at the start really come into play in towards the end.
Direction for this film comes from Bob Zemeckis, famed for his ground breaking work on Back to the Future amongst others. It trully does have his profesional touch. Camerawork and angles? Well I like the bit at the beginning of the film following the Federal Express Envelope around. Whoever though of mounting a camera on a letter...Genius! The breathtaking sight on the camerawork on top of Hanks Island when he realises just how alone and reclusive his life is going to be is just amazing. Really takes your breath away. Reminds me of some of the scenes in Cliffhanger.
I would reccommend this to any of the doubters out there who are not sure. Ignore the slating the critics gave it. I give this 9 out of 10. Hanks makes this picture for me.
