When most films come out at the cinema, Maybe I'ts just me but I always seem to never get round to watching them, even if the film looks brilliant! This was what happened when Castaway came out. I was very dissappointed and so as soon as we were able to rent out the video of this fab film, I dashed to my local Blockbuster! I walked home (with my carrier bag sparkling!) full of excited anticipation!
In our family we have a ritual about watching movies. I got the popcorn, the others got the drinks and dimmed the lights. We were ready for action.............
The two main characters in this whopper of a film are Helen Hunt and the one and only Tom Hanks-(my all time favourite!) Most films with Tom Hanks, Forest Gump, Apollo 13 etc.... I have thoughrly enjoyed and that goes for Helen Hunt as well. So I was expecting wonders, I was definetly not dissappointed!
The beginning may have started off slightly dull, but if you haven't seen this marvel then don't give up on it! Sorry if I am rambling a bit, I will try and get straight too the point ! Ok here goes......
The overall plot of the film is about a man who is obssesed with "time", i.e watches, clocks etc. He has a fairly good job in FED-EX and his position is fairly high. His girlfriend is patient and doesn't seem to mind too much if he always goes away on expeditions to do with his job. Before one of his trips, they are celebrating their christmas in a car at an airport, (as you do!) They exchange presents, and farewells, however he has a suprise in store for her he gives her a ring and tells her to open it on New Year's Eve! He then gets whisked away on a plane! As you probably already know in midst of the flight a disaster occurs, which causes them to plummit into the middle of the Pacific Ocean! The only survivor of this terrible incident is him, (Tom Hanks)! Very Unlikely but that is how it is in films!
Hanks is then cast on to an extremely remote desert island and his lifestlye becomes incredibly different and considerably more difficult then his previous life in New York! Despite the lack of dialouge the audience manages to be kept intrigued by the story and we all end up feeling very sorry for him! I reccommend watching this brilliant film on a wide screen which makes the atmosphere even more real! I will not tell you what happens at the end, but the only way he is able to survive on the island is by the fact that he knows his girlfriend will be longing to see him and also by the power of human survival techniques!
This film is one of the best! It is very heart-warming and touching, and it makes you feel like you are there with him and carrying the struggle as well! It's the best I've ever seen Hanks, and I strongly reccomend people to rent out the video!
It has a certificate of 12 and is suitable for pretty much everyone, however beware there are a few gorry parts!
I hope you have enjoyed reading this opinion, Have a nice day!
