Castaway……..The Video Should be thrown Away!!
I am a fan of both Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt and I had been meaning to get this video out for ages. I loved previous films by both Hanks and Hunt so I was really looking forward to this….
The film gets off to a slow start with Tom Hanks as a guy who works for a large dispatch company who gets to spend very little time with his girlfriend,(Helen Hunt)..
We see him kissing her at Christmas just as he is getting ready to board the plane, they exchange presents and his is a watch that opens to show her photograph. He tells her he will be back soon and boards the plane….
Needless to say the plane runs into trouble and it crashes into the sea, the scene of it going into the sea is very well done and has put me off flying. The effects of it are just brilliant and made me feel as if I was actually in the plane, maybe it was just the vodka I was drinking…
Anyway he gets into a dinghy and gets washed up on a desert island to
find he is the only survivor. Now it is at this stage that I begin to think that this film might just drag on a bit as we had a big island and just Tom Hanks on it..
Unlike the old Robinson Crusoe story there is no Man Friday in this film, in fact not even a pet pig or any animal at all. So what does Hanks do for company, this you won’t believe. He finds some packages washed up on the shore and one of them contained a white ball. Now he thinks that it would be a great idea to cut himself and put a red face on the ball so he has someone to talk to. Now I know I have been married a long time and hate having to talk to the wife but I think even if I had no company I would never talk to a ball, if I do slap me ok!!
Like most Castaway films he adapts to living on the island, making tools for cutting and getting used to eating on what he can find. The scenery on the island was good but all through the film I kept waiting for someone else to appear in the film, they didn’t!!
I like Tom Hanks but I am afraid that watching him and him alone for about an hour wandering about the island was too much for me. But for the fact I had paid for the video and wanted to know the ending I would have turned it off!!!
So the ending, should I tell you that, if you don’t want to know it turn away now ok. He makes a raft after 4 years on the island and drifts miles out to sea. He is woke up by the sound of a passing ship and rescued.
By the way he called the ball Wilson and he got very upset when Wilson drifted off to sea. I don’t know about you but if I was on an island for 4 years and didn’t have a woman in all that time I think I would have been more creative than to paint a face on a bloody ball…..
So he gets rescued and returns to his girlfriend who hasn’t seen him in 4 years and had thought he died in the plane crash, did she wait for him like any woman would. Do me a favour, a woman couldn’t wait 5 minutes never mind 4 years so the ending came as no surprise…I won’t tell you the ending except to say it was a sad ending!
Worst bit of the film was watching Hanks knocking his bad tooth out, Ouch!!….
So if I was castaway for 4 years and returned to find my wife remarried would I be devastated, I know I couldn’t keep the smile of my face for weeks. Or the reverse she is castaway for 4 years and someone calls with the news that she has turned up, the person giving me that news would get a serious punch in the mouth!!
Anyway overall the film was average but very predictable, I found it very boring in parts and certainly couldn’t recommend it to you as a good watch. So if you were stranded on an island for 4 years who would you most like to have with you, for me Sarah Michelle Gellar on an island for 4 years sounds a nice thought, Andrea Corr would bore me playing the flute all the time and think how skinny she would get, too much!!
Thanks for the read, as ever keep smiling and don’t let life get you down, your friend online………….

Great op and one I agree with 100%. So Andrea Corrs is "sex on legs" but not enough to be stranded on a dessert island with? I'm sure she'll be gutted - Thanks Scatz ;o)
Advantages: Great film, great direction, great individual performances, gripping plot Disadvantages: Slightly dodgy lighting, plot not properly explained
