This must be one of the best films of all time, that centre’s around human involvement.
I’ve heard a few criticisms of this movie that I will address later in the opinion, firstly let me say Tom Hanks puts in a superb performance as the lone Fed Ex worker (Chuck Noland) who through no fault of his own gets washed up on a desert island, after the plane he was on carrying Fed Ex parcels crashes into the sea.
Anyway, when he wakes from his ordeal in a life raft, he finds himself on a small, remote desert island, with nothing to his name except a pocket watch with a picture of his girlfriend (Helen Hunt) in it. But after a short time several parcels from the plane wash up on shore, he opens all of these bar one, which in his mind he intends to deliver when he gets back home, From the parcels he gets a pair of ice skates (Which he puts to excellent use.) a volley ball and some video tapes, and with these meagre possessions he has to survive, until he’s rescued?
The movie moves along at a surprisingly good pace and there was one part of the film maybe twenty minutes or so where Hanks doesn’t say a word, but I personally only realised this after the film had moved on, another testament to superb acting for me. And the part where he makes fire for this first time is a gem. I was that impressed that I could talk for days about this movie, but I hadn’t better.
Now I have heard some people say that this movie is just a show case for Hanks, calling it the ‘Tom Hanks show’ and such like, now it seems plain to me that if you make a film that for the main part has only one star in it, how could it be anything other than a showcase for that actors talents? As long as said actor puts in a good performance then I don’t think you could ask for any more. And believe me Hanks puts in one of his best! The other thing I heard said was that it was silly when he paints a face (With his own blood) on the ball and calls it Wilson after the maker, and through the film he talks to it as though it’s a real person, but wouldn’t anyone? To keep you sane you’d talk to the trees surely.
Finally its Director was the man himself Robert zemeckis, he of back to the future fame, and for me he proved he can still directed fantastic films.
One last thing, if after reading this you think to yourselves he didn’t say much about the film, that’s because I don’t like to spoil things, and also in this case there really isn’t to much more I could say without spoiling the outcome. I find it better if you don’t know what’s coming, so I’ve deliberately let things out. So if you haven’t seen it then do yourselves a favour and go to the video shop now and get it. you won’t be disappointed.
Cast Away - An absolute cracker of a motion picture, it’s in my top ten.
