Why is this under an action and adventure category? I don't remember any? Forgive the fact this will be a short op, but there's very little to explain really!...
The Plot --------
Tom Hanks plays a FedEx employee, who by totally uninteresting circumstances ends up in a plain crash. Uninterestingly he finds himself washed up on an uninteresting island, with no other inhabitants (although i'm sure they would have been uninteresting had there been any).
I reckon Tom had a reasonably easy job with this film. Didn't have to shave for a few months, and while on the island only had to learn about 3 lines, all of which were spoken to his friend Wilson, who was a football. To give Wilson credit he played his part well.
The plot thickens when Tom tries to light a fire and cuts his hand. Tom eventually figures out how to light a fire. Then it was back to the dreary norm...
He eventually decides he's got to get off the island, to avoid dying a lonely man, and spends a few years building a boat (well a pretty naff raft.. -he obviously was never a boy scout).
I shouldn't really say whether he gets rescued or not as that may spoil what little plot there was. Actually, from the theory that the makers of this 'film' have drawn it out for as long as is humanly possible, it follows that he must get rescued because you can add an extra hour onto the end!
The Verdict -----------
For FedEx this is a wonderful film. Every 2 minutes there's a picture of a FedEx package, a FedEx van, plane, man in uniform, with FedEx clearly stamped everywhere. They didn't need any adverts at the beginning of the film. This isn't even subtle product placement! At the end of the film I just wanted to send a parcel to someone, anyone.
If you want to watch Tom Hanks on an islnd for 2 or so hours, then this is the film for you. Personally i don't fancy Tom, and so would have found it much more interesting if, say, Katie Holmes had also been tragically shipwrecked as well! -although the thought of them together is less than inspiring.
It's a real shame that they didn't develop this film better. When Tom returns to real life there's a few things that they've brought out, such as him lighting a cigerette lighter, many times, instead of rubbing wood for 4 days! He sleeps on the floor, but having spent 5 years on an island I think there's a lot more pschologically interesting aspects that could have been portrayed.
I did manage to stay awake, although it was a close one!
It's not a film you could ever watch twice... that's the politest way I can think of to describe this.

Thought your review was hilarious, so you're going on my circle of trust. However I disagree slightly, Tom Hanks' performance on the island may have been slightly boring, but it was realistic, and in putting myself in his shoes (so to speak) for the duration of the film I found it very enjoyable.
And Wilson was actually a volleyball.
Advantages: Great film, great direction, great individual performances, gripping plot Disadvantages: Slightly dodgy lighting, plot not properly explained
