This film stars Tom Hanks and Helen Hunt, although Tom Hanks stars much more prominently. If you don't like Tom Hanks then this film is certainly not for you.
In the film Hanks plays Chuck Noland, an executive worker for the FedEx company, travelling on planes from place to place to ensure delivery of all the packages. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what is going to happen! Before the completely predictable plane crash Hanks propose to his girlfriend Kelly Frears (played by Hunt). Although she doesn't answer you know the answer would be yes, that is if Hanks ever made it back home.
The plane suffers a catastrophic failure and plummets in to the sea. Hanks, the sole survivor, manages to clamber in to a dinghy and floats towards a tropical Island, in the middle of nowhere. If you’ve ever read the book 'Lord of Flies' this Island is just how William Golding described his. A golden beach lined with palm trees!
It doesn't take long before Hanks realises he is alone, and must somehow manage to survive on his own. He soon learns coconuts are a great source of food and drink, and after a little searching the island he finds a number of FedEx packages and parcels that came from the plane. He opens these, finding a selection of what are seemingly useless items, although he ingeniously uses them to his advantage.
He even manages to turn what is an inconspicuous football in to a friend, drawing a face on it in his own blood. He starts by using at as something to talk to, but as the film continues it develops in to a more and more important part of his life, infact it seems that he would do anything to keep this 'face on a football' safe. Strange as it may seem to us none of us really know how we would act if this happened to us, being on your own for years cannot be easy and while I suppose everyone will be affected differently it must affect your mental health a little.
Throughout the film Hanks is wonderful, playing to perfection what must have been a very hard role. The majority of the film is spent seeing Hanks in his day to day life on the island, the dialogue is limited, as you can imagine with there only being the one person there!
I won't give anymore of the plot away, but I will say the ending is not as expected, whether you are the optimist or the pessimist I'm pretty sure you'll be surprised.
I loved this film, it makes a nice change from the usual blow-em-up action film. The storyline has been well written (apparently Hanks had something to do with the idea of the film) and this is helped no end by Hanks performance (in my opinion Oscar deserving). Both funny and deadly serious too, the film really makes you think how you could handle the situation.
Overall, a great film and one I'd recommend you all to see.........NOW
And its even out to rent now!
