I went to see this movie simply because it starred Tom Hanks, who may collect another Oscar with this performance. The intro is very amusing and the plane crash is so well crafted that it fills the on-looker with a horror reminiscent of the storming of the beach in Saving Private Ryan.
The rest of the film is a delight for those that enjoy watching Tom Hanks' antics. But, one gets the feeling that the writers were running out of entertaining ideas for one man and a beach, because they allowed him to attempt some very stupid enterprises.
Often films end the story too soon, but Castaway answered my "Well, what happened next?" questions rather well.
All in all, it was an amusing and worthwhile film.

Why only "fairly helpful"? Simple - it's waaaay too short! Forget about 90 words - many opinions here are well over 1000. You don't necessarily need to go that far, but you do need to put in a lot more detail.
Advantages: Great film, great direction, great individual performances, gripping plot Disadvantages: Slightly dodgy lighting, plot not properly explained
