A modern day Robinson Crusoe affair but without the stirring music that accompanied the original TV series that was aired back in the sixties, if you can remember that!
This had all the promise of a hallmark film, especially with the extremely talented Tom Hanks playing the leading role.
In short, Tom Hanks survives an air crash and gets stranded on a desert island, and we see him languish there for a number of years, before he finally sets himself adrift on a makeshift raft and returns to civilisation, and is left undecided what next to do with his life.
The most spectacular part of the film was when the aircraft plunges from the skies and dives deep into the ocean. This was superbly filmed and left you breatheless as you watched Tom Hanks' desperate attempt to free himself from the ill-fated craft. But once on the island, life becomes as dull for the viewer as it does for him. There are some good moments, but for me, Wilson, the volleyball, who Hankd befriends, actually got on my nerves after a while.
Not a total disappointment, but I feel the overlong monologue of Hanks on the island, the majority of the films, was just a little too much to bear.

Nice one - Have to agree with you about the monologue, a little too much, but still a good film nonetheless. Cheers, Justin.

Advantages: brilliant acting, great special effects, tonnes of special features, cheap Disadvantages: feels as if special effects are prioty over acting, storyline wasn't as good
