My last visit to the cinema resulted in me watching Cast Away starring Tom Hanks. I would definately convince people to go and watch this film, as the acting by Tom Hanks is something special, comparing to the likes of 'The Green Mile' and 'Saving Private Ryan'. The film starts off by showing you all about the world-wide delivery company 'FedEx'. Tom Hanks is Chuck Noland, who works for FedEx and manages key issues like time and speed of delivery for which he is obsessed about.
Before he goes on a plane trip to the other side of the world to deliver packages, he works up the courage to give his fiancé the engagement ring he had bought her a while ago and promises to marry her when he gets back. With the weather forecast not being very good, they expected the worse and during the flight things started to go wrong and it wasn't long before the whole crew were fighting for their life. Soon enough the plane crashed into the sea taking everyone inside the plane down to the depths of the ocean. Chuck manages to set himself free from the plane and swims to the surface, hanging on to a piece of debris. When he wakes, he finds himself on a deserted remote island, with not a soul in sight.
The first few days are really tough as he learns to survive and meanwhile at home, search parties are organised for his rescue. As the weeks go by, hopes of finding him alive lie in serious doubt and after neumerous searches produce negetive results they finally give up and pronounce him 'dead'. One of the greatest and interesting moments in this film is watching how Tom Hanks acts on the island when he is all alone. Most of the film focuses on this and shows how he becomes stronger and more knowledgeable as time goes by. Examples of this are when he tries to catch some fish in the sea for food, producing some funny moments.
One of the only bonuses he has is that most of the packages he was due to deliver, got washed up onto the island with him. It had been weeks before he even touched the packages, as he thought his rescue could see the packages delivered, but as time went by he relalised that he was going to be on the island for some time and so he opened all the packages to see if he could find anything useful to help him. When he was doing the old 'rubbing two sicks together' trick to make a fire, which failed on numerous occasions, he cut his hand and out of frustration he picked up a football which was in one of the packages and threw it as far across the island as he could. After he calmed down a bit, he took a look at the ball he just threw on the sand and could make out that his bloody hand print on the ball, made a kind of face on it. When he brought it back over, he made some eyes and a smiling mouth and took a look at the logo on it. It read 'Winstons'. with that in mind he decided to call his new little imaginary ball friend 'Winston'. It is winston who he now talks to on a regular basis, regarding him as a true friend, his only friend.
The saddest moment of the film has to be his last attempted raft escape, when the waves cause Winston to capsize into the water and he loses his trusty friend for good. On a positive note though, he manages to get free of the waves and out into the open sea and after hours of drifting, finally picked up by an oil tanker. When he gets home though, it has been years since his dissapearance and a lot has changed, as he soon finds out. It is quite a sad film in places, but also funny at times. You have to watch the film for yourself to understand these affects, it is truely one for all the family to watch again and again and it certainly gets my vote.

This is an excellent film review. Don't bother with Rowan's rating and comment below. He doesn't seem to have a clue what a good opinion has to be like. Cheers, Hans

Yes, i had a tear in my eye when his 'friend' floated away. A bit disturbing really considering it was only a ball!!

Nicely written, but a bit too much information for me...I have seen Castaway too and loved it!
