I was expecting so much... the trailer was magnificent. Sure you know the whole plot from watching the teaser but hey its got to be good right? Robert Zemickes, Tom Hanks... Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Apollo 13, Philadelphia.
The movie opens with Tom Hanks working for Fed Ex in Russia. Wow look at the Russia package handlers, watch the American belittle their abilities. Laugh at their transportation problems. Watch him fly home to the love of his life, Helen Hunt ( who is apparently the only actress in Hollywood since she opened in What Women Want the week before and two other films this fall). She's studing for a doctorate ( hmm a little old for that I think) Oh they are in love... they dance in the copy room.
Next we see Tom's family celebrating Christmas and all discussing "FED EX", apparently they haven't diversified their employment options. Tom has to leave... its a "package emergency"
Before he leaves he Gives Helen a box (remember this right? Big plot point right? Wrong...
Big crash... four years on an island... with "FED EX" boxes. He opens all but one.. Gee wouldn't it be ironic if that last box contained a satelite phone or a first aide kit or a book on how to build a simple raft (etc.)
How could this sequence been improved?? Hmmm how about if he landed on the island and encountered a lost Japanese world War 2 soldier who keeps him captive? Or he lands on Monster Island and has to fight Godzilla. Now that's entertainment.
Yes he's rescued.. and fly home "FED EX"! Now I don't know about any one else but if I was in a horrible plane crash and was marooned on a desert island for Four years I'd be very, very reluctant to get on a plane. Let alone a plane owned by the same company.
He's reunion with Helen is less than satisfying ... but atleast we find out what was in the box RIGHT?? RIGHT?? RIGHT?? WRONG!
So now tom goes off to deliver the last package, because FED EX lets him do this, sure..So we find out what was in the unopened box right?
Basically this feel like two movies spliced together, did we ever hear of continuity?? Unfortunately I expected much more from this film. It was a waste of time and a huge dissapointment.
I have heard so many good reviews of this film, yours is the first to have shown the bad sides. I admire you for exposing the less than impressive side to this film. I don't think i'll bother watching this film now, i'll wait until its on sky. Thanks for the opinion.....darrenloud.
