I didn't like this film. There. I've got the interesting part of the review done now. Well, in some ways what I just said is a little like CastAway. "How?" I hear you cry (Well I think I hear you anyway) and the answer to that is that CastAway is interesting for 10 minutes and then slowly but surely becomes very dull.
I'm not going to ruin the story for anyone who hasn't seen it (an easy thing to do, believe me) but the main plot goes: Man in plane crash. Man washed up on desert island. I won't ruin the ending.
Now some people may say that the beauty of this film is that Tom Hanks is on his own, on screen, for a significant length of time. Now this can work both ways for the film. It can either enhance it, as it will show the world what a great actor the subject is. Or it will ruin it due to lack of action and events. Tom Hanks is a consistently good actor and this film is no exception, however giving a great actor a dire film plot to work with will NOT give good results. It's like giving the best carpenter in the world a piece of very badly cracked and rotting wood and aking him to build a sturdy chair from it using just the wood supplied to him.
The film failed to hold my attention for the main duration, as nothing very interesting happens throughout the whole spell of Hanks being alone and at one point it even had me laughing in disbelief at the timescale that the plot is set on.
Now it does have good points. However these are thin on the ground. For example it made me think "Ooh I'd hate it if that happened to me" but it also made me think "For the love of God when will this film end?". You could believe Tom Hanks' character which enhanced what little there was to enhance, but what the whole film eventually boiled down to was a waste of £4.50.

No doubt Tom Hanks will win yet another oscar for this heap of garbage. Nice opinion though. Agree with you entirely.

Advantages: brilliant acting, great special effects, tonnes of special features, cheap Disadvantages: feels as if special effects are prioty over acting, storyline wasn't as good
