I am 65, lived in USA for some years. Well educated and rather tired of the way everything seems to be 'going to the dogs', hence have started writing reviews, trying to alert others to the Good (not many) and the Bad (too many).

Bought this on video (but now have it on DVD) when it first came out (in the early 90's) because I have always thought Scorcese is a great director and de Niro a marvellous actor and ever since I periodically watch it.
In my opinion this is the BEST gangster film ever made and it's based on the truth. There again, Scorcese is the BEST Director of this film genre. 'GOODFELLAS' is another great film directed by him, based also on a true story - actually when I lived in the USA part of what is in the last part of this film was taking place, so it is true!
Robert de Niro & Joe Pesci are ideally paired and the film comes alive with their dialogue, particularly when they remember 'back home, years ago'.
Scorcese's use of contemporary music is outstanding particularly when the action is suspended as a 'still' and appropriate music is played - just mesmerising.
Sharon Stone is also excellent as the glamorous hooker who reluctantly.marries de Niro's character; she, of course, proves her self right in this as the film ending shows.
The language is ripe and the violence bad, but nevertheless it is totally believable in the Las Vegas of the 80's, before it was, APPARENTLY, reformed. There are moments of black comedy as when the IRS are trying to spy on tax evaders and money invested has been lost - here, Joe Pesci comes into his own.
I am afraid that this film has a horrible fascination for me as generally I abhor violence and bad language but I think that it isa tribute to the direction that this film is so fascinating.
The ending is quite surprising and VERY violent, but there again they all lived violent lives and it comes as no surprise that they are betrayed by their so-called friends and suffer the violence that they have meted out to others. It IS a long film but I urge you to watch it, it's well worth it and youy may be surprised that you like it too!
