Advantages: Fine acting, good special effects Disadvantages: Lack of DVD special features
A made for TV film adaptation of one of the classic novels of English Literature starring an American sit com star?time to switch off? Well you might have thought such a premise was bound to fail but in fact this adaptation isn?t that bad?.
Gulliver?sTravels is one of those books that everyone knows (or think they do) but I suspect very few have read. Some might have seen animated versions dealing with Gulliver?stravels to Lilliput but this is only part of the story. This adaptation produced by Channel 4 is actually quite accurate to the book and includes all the adventures that are mostly forgotten. There is a subplot or more accurately an overplot that is doesn't appear in the original book but aids the narrative of the TV adaptation but in terms of the details of the events this is probably the most faithful adaptation made so ...
Advantages: Good value for money, 13 hours of cartoons! can choose which individual cartoons to watch, Disadvantages: None
A blast from the past, you could call this. I'm not sure quite how much I can say about this but considering how often I've thought that as I start to type out a review and end up surprised how long it ends up being, I'll give this one a go as well!
This definately brings back memories to me, back when I was a young child at the weekend, Saturday evenings during the late 1980s to be more exact, I remember sitting down in front of the living room TV, waiting for the 'Rinky Dink Panther' to brighten up our room. The cartoons may have been old even then but I quite clearly remember my eyes being fixed on the TV, waiting to see what this cool character would do next and how he would infruriate that guy with the big nose every time (you know the one!).
This DVD set is certainly good value for money, in my opinion, costing less than ...
Advantages: Very funny in places, decent storyline, great for kids Disadvantages: The songs!!! Aaaauuuurrrrrggghhhh!!!!!
Captain Pugwash and Tintin's Captain Haddock! Every character here is larger than life, but since they're cartoon characters this works. The first sequence in Lilliput, when a three man patrol comes across Gulliver's inert body on the beach following his shipwreck, sets the stage for the rest of the film to follow - they're like the Three Stooges, only perhaps worse!
The upshot of the way the animated characters are portrayed is that Harris is forced to play the entire film completely straight -he may have been the first ever human foil for a bunch of cartoon characters. But the humour throughout the movie works brilliantly - once I'd got over the initial shock of it being nothing like I thought it was going to be, I enjoyed watching Gulliver's Travels immensely. It's a mixture of surrealism and slapstick, with just a pinch of Swift ...
