Advantages: Superb casting, faithful adaptition of comic, Altman's direction Disadvantages: Some bad songs and dubbing, overlength, an octopus
is the crew?s contribution to Sweethaven and the world of the characters. The production design by Wolf Kroeger (ERAGON, LADYHAWKE) deserves a lot of credit, as he creates Sweethaven with a wonderful old-time design and appearance, with houses and cobbled roads that look straight out of the early 20th century, Some have complained about the sets being cluttered, though I disagree; set decorator Jack Stephens (who just received an Oscar a year before for Roman Polanski?s TESS) gives a nostalgic texture the interior of the homes, as well as the boats. And Scott Bushnell?s costumes are just right, perfectly translated from the comic book pages; Olive?s dress and shoes are the best, and literary bring to mind the animated garb she wore in the cartoons. Oh yes, and Popeye?s muscles and tattoos are there intact, and while they are prosthetics ...

Advantages: Good value for money, 13 hours of cartoons! can choose which individual cartoons to watch, Disadvantages: None
violence like what you get in Tom and Jerry but its alot less violent than some of the newer cartoons, from what I've seen.
DVD features wise, like I said already it contains 124 of the original 1960s and early 70s Pink Panther cartoons (none of the anteater cartoon that I seem to remember used to be shown next to the Pink Panther cartoons on the Pink Panther show though, unfortunately) and the Pink Panther Opening Sequences. The soundtrack is only in mono but obviously thats what the cartoons were made in back then, so thats to be expected. It gives you the authentic 1960s nostalgia/experience I guess! it also offers subtitles in French as well and of course its rated Universal (Suitable for all).
All of this is squeezed into 4 discs, which is fairly impressive. 13 hours of cartoons/footage on 4 discs certainly isn't bad and shouldn ...
Advantages: Nostalgic, lightly entertaining, ahead of it's time! Disadvantages: "I got millions'o emenies. And you is 10 or 12 of 'em!"
plenty to enjoy for those who are fond of musicals. The lullaby duet between Olive and Popeye, is very expressive of their characters and sweet in it's simplicity. While Robin Williams had to re-dub much of his muttered dialog in his film debut, he unfailingly presents us with a very clear and accurate depiction of a much beloved cartoon characters, and even in his singing he never breaks with character.
Songs like "What Am I?" "It's Not Easy Being Me", "He's Large", "I'm Mean" and Olive's romantic solo "He Needs Me" help the characters express themselves in a wholly unique way that seems utterly natural. Olive's dancing as she sings "He Needs Me" makes you feel as if life itself breathed some color into a simple cartoon character and lifted her right off the screen.
