When I first watched this film, I thought it was a loud of rubbish. At the time I was convinced it was probably the worst Disney film that I had seen and wasn't bothered about watching it again any time soon. Noah had other plans and I am currently watching it for the hundredth time! I am not sure if it's a case of becoming familiar with something and quite liking it but this film has really grown on me.
The film is based around a famous race car, Lightening Maclean, who gets lost and finds himself in a small town on Route 66 called Radiator Springs. He ends up having to stay in the town after getting arrested and being ordered to fix the road that he broke as a result of wreckless driving. He is desperate to leave and get back in time to win the Piston Cup but as time goes on he makes some great friends. Will he stay and build on the friendships he has started or will he go back to the lonely world of racing and win the cup?
Obviously this film is all about a whole load of different cars so I would say it's much more appealing to young boys like Noah. There are female characters in the film but I don't think it's enough of a pull to keep a girly girl interested for the whole hour and a half.
The characters in the film aren't particularly strong in my opinion. I actually think that the two main characters are pretty weak and it's the other characters in the film that make it what it is. Some of these are Madar who is a dopey rusty old tow truck who is really lovable and develops a deep friendship with Lightening,. Doc who is a grumpy, old race car who seems to have no compassion and vents a lot of his anger onto poor lightening and finally, Red who is my personal favourite; he is a very emotional Fire engine who cries and runs off at every whipstitch.
There are some really funny scenes in the film but I would say that it's a bit more serious than a childs film should be. Maybe the director was a little down in the dumps when he made it. There are also, as seems to be the theme with most of these animations, a few lessons to be learnt a long the way.
One thing that the makers of the film really got right is the music. Every song is very fitting to mood of the different scenes and me and my hubby find that we end up singing and dancing around the room to some of the them like a pair of idiots whilst our children watch in dismay!
Whilst this film is entertaining for boys, it can be a little boring for adults. Like I have said before, it has grown on me but I still don't think it's brilliant. If you have a young boy who is into cars then I would recommend you watch it with them but apart from that it's not one that you should bother with, you're not missing out on much.

Advantages: Good CGI, interesting characters, nice concept, quite heart warming Disadvantages: Quite long, story is a little slow half way through (may bore younger kids)

Review of Cars (DVD)
Advantages: One of all-time great comedies; Hughes' best with Martin & Candy making a great team Disadvantages: Bonus features could have been improved; no commentary, no Martin
Advantages: Excellent documentary about the biggest conspiracy in the auto industry Disadvantages: Will no doubt make you angry and outrage that electric cars are not still existing
