Cars is an animated film produced by Pixar and Disney in 2006. It revolves around ‘the piston cup,’ a fictional racing trophy and the cars that are involved in it. Lightning McQueen is the new, yet favoured car. At the finale of the trophy, it turns out that for the first time there is a draw, and so a compromise is reached: whoever gets to the next race first will win the trophy, title and sponsors. However, Lightning gets stuck on route 66 in a town called Radiator Springs when he causes havoc there on the way through, will he ever make it back in time and what will he learn?
It was made by Pixar, whose films I always find excellent and they seem to make their animated features just right, they have a distinctive style and this shows through in cars.
The main voices include Owen Wilson, Paul Newman and Bonnie Hunt as the three main and most on screen characters. Owen Wilson seemed like a really fitting choice for the main character/car, Lightning McQueen because the personality of the car is similar to Owen Wilson’s actual personality, and you can see a bit of him in the animation.
There are also many themes in the film such as friendship, and the message seems to be that friendship is so important and fame won’t last forever.
The genre is obviously animated with a splash of comedy, and it’s definitely a family film.
The rating is a PG, there isn’t really too much inappropriate, but you might find it inappropriate for small children as there is some cartoon and slapstick violence. It’s suitable for the whole family, and that’s who I would recommend it to, especially if the family are Disney fans. It’s a really good film to sit down and watch with the whole family, and will be enjoyable for all generations.
I was given my cop of this DVD as a gift, so while I’m not too sure of the price of my DVD, it’s available on play.com for £14.99 with free delivery, however there is an offer currently on at Asda with two Disney dvds for £15, and Cars is included in this offer so this is a better deal.
Compared to other pixar films it is quite similar, as it shows a different point of life, showing racing from the point of view of the cars, like how the pixar film A Bug’s Life shows bugs having an adventure. Also it is similar in that it has a wide range of main characters, and a message.
The film had a massive amount of success, and it even managed to win the first Oscar for Best Animated Picture ever, it also performed really well with the critics and at the box office.
Overall I was really impressed with this film, and thought it was a great offering from Pixar with an original plot, a company who continue to produce great quality films over and over again.
