Sergeant Grimshaw (William Hartnell long beforeDoctor Who) is about to retire and hopes that he can get his last platoon into shape as Champion Platoon of its intake. Unfortunately, the new recruits include the clumsy Golightly (Charles Hawtrey), the barrack-room lawyer Bailey (Kenneth Williams) and the hypochondriac Horace Strong (Kenneth Connor). Love interest is provided by Bob Monkhouse and Shirley Eaton--newlyweds separated by the call-up and reunited by her taking a job in the canteen--and by the pursuit of Horace by Dora Bryan's Nora. Advantages: It's a Carry On. Great script. Wonderful performances. Disadvantages: Early in the series of Carry Ons so few familiar Carry On regulars

Maybe it's because there are few Carry On regulars in this the first film and that the lead roles are all taken by performers who did not remain with the series. These early Carry Ons definitely gave Mr Connor the opportunity to show what a fine actor he could be.
Funniest performance in my opinion comes from Charlie Hawtrey who, from the outset when he collides with Bill Owen, had me howling! Just the way he trots from one end of the barracks to the other when Hartnell shouts "on the double" reminded me what a comedy genius this gentleman really was!

Sergeant is one of those films that probably gets overlooked in favour of the COs made from the mid 60s to the early 70s. In fact this probably happens to many of the black and white films and yet there are some little gems among them. Perhaps it's because the scripts written by Talbot Rothwell are just so good poor old Norman Hudis has always taken a back seat. I think this has certainly been my experience and I have to say I haven't watched Sergeant more than half a dozen times and yet it's really rather good.
But why am I so surprised that Sergeant is so good, after all it was a huge hit in the late 50s and set Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas on the road to greatness? And if it hadn't been for Sergeant there might not have been any other Carry On films!

And yet Kenneth Connor, Kenneth Williams, Charlie Hawtrey and Hattie Jacques shine in their supporting roles and despite a solid and likeable lead performance from William Hartnell it is Kenneth Connor who provides the best performance.
Poor old Horace Strong, a martyr to hypochondria, probably thinks things couldn't possibly get any worse. Then along comes the army and he not only has to contend with his hypochondria, but also an ongoing daily battle with medical officer Hattie Jacques and the unwanted amorous attentions of Dora Bryan. In the wrong hands Horace Strong could have easily become tiresome which could well have soured the whole film, but in Kenneth Connor's capable hands this almost pathetic creature becomes rather endearing and the film becomes far more enjoyable for it. Even his blossoming romance with Dora Bryan overshadows the more straight forward romantic problems of Bob Monkhouse and Shirley Eaton despite superb performances by both.
Mr Connor's line, "your just an 'eap of chits" has always been one of my favourite lines, but funniest lines definitely come from our Charlie
Eric Barker - "How many legs does a flamingo go to sleep on? Charlie - "Er......" Eric - "Slow! Slow! Charlie - "Quick! Quick! Slow!"
Such a simple and relatively unfunny line made all the more enjoyable by Charlie Hawtrey's impeccable delivery! He shines also during the bayonet practice, where he takes particular pleasure in inflicting pain on his enemy, "Now then you beast.......... hand back that cup final ticket". The look on his face when Kenneth Williams tries to drag him off the dummy, "Let go, this is my turn". Sheer genius. Thank God he became a Carry On regular!
Kenneth William's shines also, his encounter with senior officer Eric Barker a particularly good example.
Eric Barker - "Your rank!" Kenny - "That's a matter of opinion!"
In fact Eric Barker himself is not devoid of talent in this film. His continuous flow of mathematical outbursts could grate on the nerves, but not for this fan. "Respectable girl plus sex mad youth multiplied by char-a-banc outing equals three lives ruined!"
All in all a very enjoyable film and one that certainly merits more attention than it gets.
THOUGHTS ON CARRY ON SERGEANT
I hadn't watched this film for several months and although I knew the plot I hadn't seen the film often enough to give it an analytical review without watching it again. However, I enjoyed the film more than I remembered it and certainly laughed in a few more places.
I thought the variation in characterizations was very clever not only in their parody of the Army but creating a bedrock for some of the characters that ... ...main features of these Carry On films. In one couple you have the warm sentimental rose-tinted love shared equally and in the other you have the comedic lascivity of one person and the worried 'virginal' behaviour of the other. (Also see HJ/KW in Doctor, BW/KW in Doctor, HJ/KW in Camping, KW/HJ in Again Doctor, HJ/SJ in Dick etc etc).
Kenneth Connor's professional relationship with Hattie Jacques also develops with interest. She starts of as this ...

Advantages: well made, good cast, the start of something big :-) Disadvantages: not hilariously funny, quite different to the Carry Ons of the 1970s
Carry On Sergeant was made in 1958 & was the first in a long line of the Carry On films, one of the most phenomenally successful series in the history of British comedy. Carry On Sergeant had some of what would become the core cast - Kenneth Connor, Kenneth Williams, Hattie Jaques, Charles Hawtrey - but the days of Sid James & Barbara Windsor were still to come.
Headlining Carry On Sergeant was William Hartnell, later famous as the first actor to ... ...plays a convincingly austere sergeant in the title role of this film, as the main cast try to pull themselves up from being the worst section of the Army to the best.
This is a good film, entertaining & well made, but lacks the uproariously funny gags & stereotypes of the later films. You won't find quick flashes of bare breasts in this one, nor will you be rolling on the floor with laughter - but it is worth watching. ...

Advantages: Realistic account of the Eastern Front on film Disadvantages: Never got the recognition it deserves
act as it may spoil the film for those who have not seen it.
Prior to seeing Saving Private Ryan, this film was to me the most realistic portrayal of combat I had seen. It still holds up against more modern films that have the benefit of CGI, and the story, although not a new one when you strip away the surroundings, works extremely well in the Ostfront setting. If you have never seen it before, watch it at least once - you will never forget seeing this film.
This Region 2 DVDcarries some still shots and filmographies of the major actors involved as extras, typical of films of the period given a DVD release.

This comical caper centres on a bunch of raw recruits at an army training unit. Charles Hawtrey stars as the sergeant who is daft enough to accept a bet that his last squad of recruits will win the 'Star Squad' award.

This is the classic first CARRY ON film. Sergeant Grimshaw (William Hartnell) hopes to retire in a blaze of glory by winning the Star Squad prize with his final platoon.
