Introduction Carry on Screaming is a spoof on the popular Hammer Horror films and a great example of British Comedy. There are mummies, Jekyll and Hyde transformations, werewolves, vampires and creaking doors in profusion. This was twelfth of the Cary On films.
The Storyline A number of young girls has been disappearing and turned into shop manikins. Investigation leads the detectives to the old house of Doctor Watt.
The Setting The film is set in the centre of the English countryside with the woods always cloaked in fog; at the centre of these mysterious and spooky woods is the Doctor and his sisters old family house and finally in the centre of the house is the mad doctors laboratory with is complex (well for the time) frightening equipment and vats of boiling oil (“frying tonight” as the Doctor famously calls as he processes his latest victim). With the obligatory cobwebs and dark corridors, all the clichés of the gothic house of Hammer Horror are represented.
Caricatures Consistent with the clichéd setting, the main characters are caricatures of famous detectives, villains and assistants with the ubiquitous comedic names.
Harry H Corbett hams it up as Detective Bung, a spoof Sherlock Holmes Peter Butterworth as Slowbottom, his dim but faithful side kick. Bernard Bresslaw plays the typical English butler. It was always the butler what did it. Kenneth Williams plays the brilliant but mad Doctor Fenella Fielding, his pale and sultry sister (rather like Morticia Adams) Jim Dale plays the naive and innocent victim.
The Music The music in the film is utilized to maintain the comedic theme. As with many Carry On films, musical jokes abound. The theme from Steptoe and son follow Harry H Corbett’s horse. The Z Cars theme plays to the police car.The title song, “Carry on Screaming” is sung by Jim Dale. It has catchy lyrics if not a bit silly, “Because when you’re screaming, I know that you’re dreaming of me”.
Puns As with all Carry Ons, puns proliferate. The obvious one is on Kenneth Williams’ character Dr Watt. Doctor What? What? Fenella Fielding asks the inspector if he minds if she smokes then guess what? Another Adams Family classic is repeated as her whole body gives off smoke.
Sexual Innuendo Well what can you say, innuendo is the stock on which all Carry On films are based? If you took out the innuendo there would not be much left. Carry on Screaming is no different with classic examples being when the detective says to his side kick during an interview with Fenella Fielding, “Her skirt” “Did you get that down?” Sergeant Bung and his wife verbally banter in their bedroom. She nags him mercilessly, "It’s been so long since I had anything from you, I’ve forgotten whether its worth having". Other more risqué examples abound however to list them would rather spoil the enjoyment of the film for those, if there are any, who have not yet seen it.
Parody There exists for good reason a number of benchmark scenes from classic horror films which are repeated over and over again even today in modern horror and science fiction films. Screaming parodies some of the best, extracting every comic moment possible. The opening scene shows a tall figure striding awkwardly through the woods, an obvious parody of Frankenstein. Kenneth Williams is grotesquely transformed into a monster when he drinks his own concoctions in his laboratory, a parody on Jekyll and Hyde. Watch and count how many you recognise.
The DVD From as little as £5.95
Conclusion This was the first Carry On without Sid James, who unfortunately died before it was made and was sadly missed. How would you have cast him? His role was to be Sergeant Bung I wonder how different the film would have been with his unique talent. It is a good film none the less. There is some brilliant overacting. Kenneth William’s facial expressions and nasal speech do not disappoint. Charles Hawtrey plays only a very small part largely due to his personal problems with alcohol but a Carry On could not be the same without him.
A timeless horror spoof. My son watches this today and enjoys it just as much as I did when it was released.
Advantages: Some good performances, fairly funny, good farce Disadvantages: A bit old hat
CARRY ON BACKGROUND
*********************************
The Carry On Films started in 1958 with Carry On Sergeant, which was made in Black and White and set in the post war years, when conscription was still around. From then, until 1978, twenty nine Carry On films were made in total, at Pinewood Studios. They were all comedies, made on a shoestring budget, and were produced by Peter Rogers and directed by Gerald Thomas. There were several mainstays ... ...can laugh at the early Carry On films as just a bit of nonsense. Well I hope we can. When they were conceived they were funny, fresh and new although they used all the old traditional, basic type of humour.
CARRY ON SCREAMING
******************************
Carry on Screaming is one of the Carry On Films that were made during that period of time, in the 60's, before these films became dreadfully dire. Now I know the humour was always farcical and ...

...comedy and especially of the Carry On films. I wrote a review on Carry On Screaming a couple of years ago, but wanted to write a completely new one so when I saw it was on TV today, I decided it was the ideal opportunity. Yes, I do own Carry On Screaming on video too, but it’s not the same as watching it on TV ;-)
Screaming was made in 1966, becoming the twelfth Carry On film. It was my favourite as a child and I can remember the vivid image ... ...infamous low budget of the Carry On films. Then again, other Carry Ons (notably Henry and Cleo) were similarly lavish on next to nothing by borrowing period costumes from other productions, so perhaps this happened here too. (Hammer Horror, anyone?)
The story incorporates a multitude of horror images with a good old detective story. Borrowing heavily on Sherlock Holmes, we have Harry H. Corbett as Detective Sergeant Bung, aided and hindered by his ...

Advantages: Monsters & Fenella Fielding Disadvantages: Lack of extras
...is most definately my favourite Carry On film for many different reasons.
It used to scare the heck out of me as a child (I remember having nightmares about it several times after seeing it as a very young boy) but as I grew older I found Fenella Fielding extremely sexy and enjoyed watching it for her amazing performance.
This is the Carry On teams take on classic British Horror, emulating such greats as Hammer Studios. They give us Frankensteins, ... ...more unusual Carry Ons as we don't have Sid James (who was away doing theatre at the time), Hattie Jaques or Barbara Windsor.
Instead the male lead is played by Harry H. Corbett (better known as Harold Steptoe) despite being written for Sid James, the character is even called Sidney Bung but to maintain a Sid James type of continuity his battle axe of a wife is played by Carry On regular Joan Sims who normally did play SId's wife in most of the ...

A good plot of girls going missing in a dark and misty forest, with the monster oddbod as the minion to the master villan Kenneth Williams, based at a secluded house in the middle of nowhere.
