This film represents the first major watershed in the Carry on series. Last one written by Norman Hudis, the introduction of some new, familiar faces, and the brand spanking effects of colour!
First Impression ------------------------ The ultimate low budget film series shelling out on a cruise? Don't bet on it! The producers do credit P&O with their help in the film, but the fact most of the on board deck scenes are around the same area (Swimming pool and walkways around) can tell you something!
The Cast -------------- Already by the sixth film, established names were Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Sidney James and Liz Fraser. Newer faces in this film include Lance Percival and Dilys Laye. Note that there is no Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims or Hattie Jacques in this one. Also look out for a fresh faced Anton Rodgers who makes an appearance near the end of the film, when Dr Binn tries to get him out of the way so he can be alone with his intended love! If you don't know who Anton is, he was in Fresh (and French) Fields and the BBC Comedy May to December.
The Plot ------------- A cruise liner is about to set sail on its latest voyage with the captain (Sid) inspecting his troops. Three new faces emerge in the line up with the captain declaring he does not like new faces! Marjoriebanks (pronounced Marchbanks) and Dr Binn with the new barman. Also, a new chef trying to find his way to the kitchen (Lance Percival). Enjoy this scene where the 'cook' meets the captain. As the cruise develops, all the crew try to impress the captain so they may win a place on the new super cruiseliner to cross the Atlantic. Suffice to say, they try too much and make the wrong impression! For one final effort, the new crew members hold a suprise party for the captain and end up impressing him. Look out for the gastronomic delight that Lance cooks up! And I thought I came up with some odd concoctions!!!
A side plot, the cook is seasick, and needs to see the sea! Cue an immortal line from Marjoriebanks(Kenneth Williams) "What will it look like if the cook can't cook 'cos the quack can't cure him!" What ensues is memorable Carry On physical comedy!
Memories -------------- All those outlined above plus the scene in the bar where Dilys Laye and Liz Fraser join the regular drunk (Ronnie Stevens) and the barman and try most of the drinks in a matter of minutes!! Also Kenneth Conner singing a ballad where his mind wanders(!) and he ends up serenading... well, I don't want to spoil it!
Conclusion ----------------- An entertaining entry into the series, and made better by being in Colour. It is similar to the first five films, and was by all accounts going to be based on the Navy, but was deemed too similar to other offerings at the time. Indeed, Eric Barker, a regular face in the early films, is credited with the film being based on his idea.
A new era dawned with this film, Some innuendo contained in the script but nowhere near as smutty as compared to what was to come! A script that was a bit better than standard but not as immortal as Cleo or Camping. A watchable Carry on but just inside my Top 10 carry on films.
Thanks for reading, enjoy the film!
