A Life on the ocean wave with the Carry On crew! Sid James is the long-suffering Captain ... more
of the luxury cruise liner S.S. Happy Wanderer, a ship full of misfits who don't know their portholes from any other holes! It isn't long before the luckless passengers mix with hopeless crew to raise titanic laughs on the ship of fools.Carry On Cruising is the sixth Carry On film and the first in colour, and stars all the Carry On favourites including Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, and Lance Percival.
This may be partly due to the film's well-intentioned stab at some sort of authenticity, being set as it is on a genuine cruise liner rather than in a studio full of cheap sets. It swiftly becomes apparent that the cramped environment isn't well suited to the kind of slapstick which is usually a key ingredient in anyCarry Onfilm. Veteran couch spuds will recall that the TV seriesTrianglewas similarly disadvantaged, except that it wasn't supposed to be funny. As ever, though, the brilliant cast-in-residence manage to make the most of the situation. The plot, such as it is, deals with the tribulations which beset a world-weary captain (James) when he realises he's been saddled with a crew of misfits and incompetents (practically everybody else) on a cruise which is of course supposed to offer its passengers every comfort and convenience. If there's a single outstanding performance it has to be that of Lance Percival's chef, whose cheeriness as he presides over his various culinary experiments is extremely funny in a menacing sort of way.On the DVD:The DVD issue has no additional features.--Roger Thomas

THOUGHTS ON CARRY ON CRUISING
As I watch each Norman Hudis film in turn I find it more and more difficult to find something new to say, as it always seems to be a case of 'seen it all before'. It is something we have now come to expect and Carry On Cruising is no exception.
Set on the SS Happy Wanderer this film recounts the experiences of passengers and crew on a cruise. Sid James plays the Ship's Captain and seeks nothing less than total professionalism from his staff. With the likes of Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor, Jimmy Thompson, Lance Percival and Cyril Chamberlain as first-timers on the ship, Captain Wellington Crowther typically gets less aptitude than he bargained for.
Sid simply regenerates his Sergeant role from Carry On Constable, trying in vain to run a tight ship. From the moment he first meets his new crew you know that the ride will be choppy. He tries to set his stall out early by asserting his authority, yet only succeeds in making himself look silly, as he says: "I'm going to be blunt and make some very cutting remarks!"
With Kenneth Williams as Marjoribanks we get a character who this time bridges the gap between erudition and juvenility. We are given a man who appears very knowledgeable, for example in his psycho-analysis of Captain Crowther, his observation of the Captain's grammatical error in the previously mentioned quote and his verbosity in the request for a "policy of unremitting quasi-Teutonic organisational perfectionism" (or as Dr. Binn explains: "Fingers out!"). Yet at other times he shows complete infantilism, with his caricature drawing instead of working, his taking a shower whilst wearing pyjamas and his bull impersonation to Kenneth Connor's toreador.
As Dr. Binn, Kenneth Connor is less neurotic than we expect him to be but the shy, clumsy element remains as vivid as ever, especially when he falls in love with passenger Flo (Dilys Laye): "Would you like to poop up to the pop deck with me?"
Lance Percival is nothing more than a replacement for Charles Hawtrey and although he gives a good performance as the totally idiotic cook, Haynes, the magic of Hawtrey is clearly missing. The other two crew members are very much supporting roles and are played fairly straight with no discernible comical elements to their characters.
The three main passengers are played by Dilys Laye, Liz Fraser and the impish Esma Cannon, whose individual madcap behaviour complements the double-act of Glad and Flo. As with Regardless, her dizziness truly brightens every scene she appears in, be it playing ping-pong, partaking in a PT class, learning Arabic or jogging with Kenneth Connor. I defy anyone not to laugh when she is on screen. As a trio, they are seen at their best in the classic bar scene as Dilys Laye tries to out-drink Esma Cannon, much to Liz Fraser's disgust:
Dilys Laye: "Mud in your eye!" Esma Cannon (rubbing her eye): "Really? Oh never mind. They say it's good for the skin." Dilys Laye: "What shall we have now?" Esma Cannon: "Flo dear….." Dilys Laye: "Two Flo dears."
Glad and Flo's main aim is to get a man and despite the fact Dr Binn falls in love with Flo, she and Glad fall in love with the PT Instructor, and then Flo herself with the Captain! Her affection for the Captain shows his vulnerability against the austerity he tries to portray. One line she delivers is particulary close to the mark when she claims that: "A man can be more proud of his craft than his barracks." The Captain's slightly shocked reaction shows the implication of the line and illustrates how near the knuckle this was. As she then makes a pass at him he desperately tries to resist: "Flo….ebb a little!" His prayers are eventually answered though when she finally falls for the Doctor (or rather his singing). The ballad that Dr Binn sings for Flo is a touching moment despite the comical context of him singing it to a sleeping drunk and the inspired line of: "Oh Bella Flo….Please, let's have a …I love you so!!"
The reliable ending is nothing unique. Captain Crowther eventually realises the worth of his crew and as a result they decide to hold a party to mark his 10th anniversary as a Captain. He gets his 'Aberdeen Angus', Dr Binn gets his girl and we all get the feel-good-factor of another safe yet unspectacular Hudis film. However, the absence of both Joan Sims and Charles Hawtrey is overtly obvious and the formula has now really died its death. These detract from what could have been a much better film. The dialogue is well-written as always and excellently interpreted by the cast, but you get the feeling the series needs a change of direction……..enter Talbot Rothwell!
I love Carry On Cruising! But it could quite easily have been another
Sergeant clone like Constable, had Norman Hudis chosen to send up the Navy. Instead he chooses to place the crew on a cruise ship which obviously gives scope for plenty of interaction between the crew and the civilian passengers, or the boys and the girls as it transpires!
Again we have a collection of misfits, this time a bunch of new crew members on Sid James well established ... ...must stress is my favourite Carry On performer. Dilys Laye is outstanding, having joined the film at just 2 or 3 days notice when Joan fell ill.
This is by far my favourite Hudis' Carry On and I'd recommend it to Carry On fans and non-Carry On fans alike! ...

Advantages: Carry on in Colour, finally!! Disadvantages: Similar to the first five
...first major watershed in the Carry on series. Last one written by Norman Hudis, the introduction of some new, familiar faces, and the brand spanking effects of colour!
First Impression
------------------------
The ultimate low budget film series shelling out on a cruise? Don't bet on it! The producers do credit P&O with their help in the film, but the fact most of the on board deck scenes are around the same area (Swimming pool and walkways around) ... ...What ensues is memorable Carry On physical comedy!
Memories
--------------
All those outlined above plus the scene in the bar where Dilys Laye and Liz Fraser join the regular drunk (Ronnie Stevens) and the barman and try most of the drinks in a matter of minutes!!
Also Kenneth Conner singing a ballad where his mind wanders(!) and he ends up serenading... well, I don't want to spoil it!
Conclusion

An entertaining entry into ...

Advantages: entertaining, well acted Disadvantages: some of the regulars are missing
Carry On Cruising was made in 1962 & was the last one to be written by Norman Hudis & the first one in colour ! This one is set - you might have guessed ! - on a boat, captained by Sid James. Kenneth Williams & Kenneth Connor form part of his crew, but many of the other regulars - Hattie Jacques, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey - are absent for this one.
Instead we have Lance Percival as the chef, fitting in well with the rest of the cast, with the glamour ...

Advantages: Light hearted film Disadvantages: Some of the top cast members are missing
Carry On Cruising is the 6th film in this series and the first one in colour. It was released in 1962. The cast includes Sid James, Kenneth Williams, Liz Frazer, Dilys Laye, Esma Cannon and Lance Percival.
As the title suggests this film is set on a ship. Sid James plays the Captain on the luxury cruise liner S.S. Happy Wanderer who tries in vain to keep control on his passengers and staff alike.
Carry On Cruising sees the smooth running of the ... ...and misadventures.
One of my favourite parts of the film is where Kenneth Willaims tries in a desperate attempt to impress the Captain, by playing a game of table tennis with the delightful Esma Cannon. Esma quickly takes to the game and gives Williams a run for his money. Williams decides to put in more effort in order to try a last ditch attempt at winning the game. In doing so, he whacks the ball which ends up in the Captain's mouth. Esma's reaction ...
