~ ~ I just couldn’t resist it. I really couldn’t.
There was the ‘mad cabbie’ with a £20 Amazon voucher to spend, and I knew exactly what I wanted. The ‘American Werewolf in London’ DVD. (Review to follow) And then I spotted it as I was browsing around the DVD section in general. A film absolutely made for a mad wee Dublin cabbie.
Sid James and Hattie Jacques in the 1963 comedy film by director Gerald Thomas, ‘Carry On Cabby’.
I was always a ‘Carry ... ...so a further £12.99 was promptly added to my credit card bill, and the movie is now part of my (fast growing) DVD collection.
~ ~The late Sid James plays Charlie, the obsessive owner of a taxi company called “Speedee Taxis” (how original) in a small provincial English city. Advantages: Good story, great cast, funny Disadvantages: no Kenneth Williams!!
...decided to concentrate on a Carry On film. Ever since my childhood in the 1970s, I shared many a happy hour watching Carry On films on TV with my Dad. Cabby was made in 1963, only the seventh in a line of films that would stretch to over thirty. You won’t find Kenneth Williams or Barbara Windsor in this one, nor any nude bottoms or bare boobs. The main storyline is easy to follow and probably one which reflected the concerns of many people at the time it was released. Peggy (Hattie Jacques) ...

THOUGHTS ON CARRY ON CABBY
Unlike the previous six films in the series which did not have one or two central characters, this film IS Sid James and Hattie Jacques. The situation they find themselves in is far more true to life than what has gone before, as the film centres on the strain of their relationship caused by work, and attitudes between the male and female genders. This is probably the film which makes the strongest social comment in the ... ...the bag?/She's already in."
Carry On Cabby is ultimately about relationships and how your involvement in work can blinker your view on other important elements of your life. Underpinning this is the typical Carry On concept of male/female competition. It is undoubtedly the strongest reflection of society and some of the problems faced by those in it, (such as failing relationships, failing business and even alcohol misuse and crime). And all this ...
