Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the tormented daughter of a religious nutcase played by Piper Laurie. Sissy plays a social outcast who is tormented (and when I say tormented - I mean really tormented!) by her callous, heartless classmates. Carrie is certainly not having a good time at school.

This is one heck of a movie in it's own right, but it has actually been adapted from the Stephen King best-selling book of the same name. I'll give one thing away - the shock level is far from low! - I rank ‘Carrie’ alongside ‘The Exorcist’ as one of my all time favourite horror films.

The best performance of the film goes to Sissy Spacek whose pale and anaemic presence has always been a little strange, and whenever I see her in other films she is still playing Carrie in my mind. Piper Laurie is absolutely brilliant as the psychotic mother, but watch out for those knives! (also John Travolta has a small part (oooeerrr) as a thug.)
It's the quiet moments that really scare you though, and that’s the reason it’s so much more than the typical teen/horror flick of the 70’s and it shows why this movie remains so effective 24 years after its first release.
The Director Brian De Palma does an excellent job of pacing the movie which allows the characters to develop as well as slowly but surely building the tension. With the combination of strong acting and directing, this movie is intense, disturbing, and perfectly done.
This film will scare you out of your wits if you let it, there's plenty of surprises to keep even the most hardened horror fan absorbed. It's still a distinctively scary movie, even if you DO know the ending........
Here’s a titbit for you:- The film's dream sequence was shot in reverse, so it would give it a weird atmosphere when played forward. My verdict:- The ultimate adolescent horror movie.
Advantages: great acting by Sissy Spacek Disadvantages: looks a little bit dated now

Carrie, a schoolgirl, lives with her strict Christian mother (Piper Laurie), and is continuously bullied at school, as well as at home. ...of the same name. Carrie White (excellently portrayed by Sissy Spacek) is a shy and unassuming schoolgirl who is the brunt of her classmate’s jokes. This is mainly the fault of her overbearingly religious mother Margaret White (Piper Laurie) who preaches the gospel to everyone and everything, including her own daughter.

Stephen King's Carrie is brought to life here in this mid-seventies adaptation by Brian De Palma. It is an adaptation which is nothing short of excellent, but which lacks some of the pace of King's novel. The story itself is probably one which is known to all, but if it has managed to pass you by over the years then it goes a little something like this:
Carrie is an unpopular teenage girl in high school. Her classmates think she is weird and freaky ... ...banter which goes on there. Carrie has her first period in the showers and has no clue as to what is going on - freaking out because she thinks she is bleeding to death whilst everyone else hovers over her taunting and jeering. They are punished of course, and when Carrie returns home, she herself is punished again by her mother who claims that it is because she has sinned that God has visited this upon her...like I said she is quite insane. The ...

...bone, especially the ones featuring Carrie and her mother. The story centres on a strange loner in a small town who lives with her obsessively religious mother and is naive about most things in life, such as puberty, which we find out in the disturbing first scene. Carrie is taunted by her classmates and when the PE teacher, who has taken pity on Carrie punishes all the girls, one plans revenge but another is sorry for Carrie and persuades her boyfriend ... ...right to go. Carrie eventually agrees to go against her mother’s wishes and even makes her own dress. By now we have begun to be introduced to Carrie’s strange telekinetic powers. At the prom Carrie is actually having a good time and so is her date, who originally did not want to go with her. But the girl who resents Carrie has planned to ruin her night and does so in the most shocking fashion. Carrie is humiliated in front of the whole ...

...into two, one showing you Carrie and the other showing all the havoc she creates. Perhaps this is a strange thing to comment on, but i think that the film's age has a lot to do with it's effect. The picture quality of the film isn't the sharpest (was this deliberate or is it just the age?) and it gives it a distinct "dreamlike" feel which is quite unique. Overall, Carrie is a true classic that will scare you - don't watch this alone! ...

to Watt's home & is then named Junior & trained to kidnap girls just like Oddbod.
Bung & Slothbotham set up a sting operation to try and capture the monster but Slothbotham (dressed as a women) is kidnapped by Oddbod, Bungs wife is also kidnapped by Oddbod as she had followed Bung thinking he was having an illicit rendezvous with another women.
This has a great horror ending with Bung, Slobotham & Potter all being chased by Oddbod & Junior, Potter becoming a werewolf and Watt's mummy getting animated and throwing Watt into the vitrifying liquid they has previously used to turn the kidnapped women into dummies.
It's a great movie with lots of funny jokes both visual and wordplay. The dvd has subtitles and information about the movie itself. In general Carry On dvd's don't ever have much in the way of extras and this isn't much ...
Advantages: Some good performances, fairly funny, good farce Disadvantages: A bit old hat
double entendres. The set resembles a second class Addams Family one, but the period costumes are good.
Whether or not you will like this film depends on you. Some will still find it hilarious, others may have done once upon a time and for some the humour will escape them and always would have done. For me I still manage a giggle or two if I watch this. It is on Television from time to time and is available on DVD at a cheap price.
As Carry On films go it is an 8/10 one. The characters and actors are good but I feel it was very much of the time. Still if you are into Carry On films you should like this film.
My favourite line from the film, in common with many viewers, is Kenny Williams screaming ' Frying Tonight' just before his demise. You will have to watch the film to the end though to catch it.

Now, it would be unfair to criticise Carry On films for being unoriginal, as they were never the products of hours of painstaking preparation. More like, a few thoughts kicked up by drunken pub talk.
However, when watching Carry on Dick I couldn't help but feel as though it was somewhat lacking in something. The problem was that I was completely unable to put my finger on what it might be. At least this made the time pass quicker.
Don't get me wrong I did enjoy and would recommend it as a film that still stands the test of tine if you accidentally turn it on at say 12:15 AM one late night.
That said, it can only we congratulated at being the perfect innuendo reference manual. ...

DVD Description
Brian De Palma's commercial breakout, based on a novel by Stephen King, helped launch a whole slew of teen-based horror films, and Carrie the blood-spattered prom queen has taken her throne in the pantheon of modern American myth. High school girls played by Amy Irving (in her film debut), P.J. Soles, and Nancy Allen plot to avenge themselves on ostracized fellow student and budding telekinetic Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) after they get in trouble for pelting her with tampons. When they get popular boy Tommy Ross (William Katz) to be her date for the prom, the stage is set for some heart-rending cruelty and fiery retribution. De Palma expertly uses split screens, slow motion, color filters, and tracking shots to imbue the proceedings with a haunting, allegorical elegance. Piper Laurie plays Carrie's mentally ill, devoutly Christian mom; she's brilliant, as is Spacek. John Travolta has a memorable pre-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER role as one of the girls' beer-guzzling boyfriends. There was finally a sequel in 1999, as well as a short-lived Broadway musical.
