(Scarface), based on a pair of books by Edwin Torres. Pacino plays a Puerto Rican ex-con trying hard to go straight, but his loyalty to his lowlife attorney (a virtually unrecognisable Sean Penn) and enemies on the street make that choice difficult. Penelope Ann Miller plays, somewhat unlikely, a stripper who has a romance withPacino's character. The film finds De Palma tempering his more outlandish moves (think ofBody DoubleorSnake Eyes) just as he did with the popularUntouchablesandMission: Impossible. But whileCarlito's Waywas not as commercially successful as those two movies, it is a genuinely compelling work graced with a fine performance by Pacino and a surprising one from Penn. --Tom Keogh
director's best film since his gangland thriller,Scarface(1983), starring Al Pacino. Less violent than the former film, but again set against a background of drug dealing, the movie is a tragedy of a reformed man irrevocably doomed by his criminal past. Having made an enormous impression with his music for Kenneth Branagh'sHenry V,Carlito's Waymarked Patrick Doyle's first Hollywood A-list production and he acquitted himself brilliantly. The title selection is gorgeous string adagio, immediately establishing the mood of romantic fatalism which haunts the drama. "Carlito And Gail" has a tender, uncertain yearning, leading a more relaxed lyricism in "The Café". Doyle treats the listener to a pair of late night jazzy interludes before the album builds slowly but inexorably to the virtuoso 10-minute "Grand Central". This is a pulsating, restless, explosive, endlessly inventive and thrilling cue anticipating the composer's blistering work onMary Shelley's Frankenstein. The resigned, elegiac "Remember Me" is a deeply moving finale. Patrick Doyle returned to the mean streets of New York forDonnie Brasco, while De Palma'sDressed To Killhas a comparably romantic score courtesy of Pino Donaggio.--Gary S. Dalkin
Carlito Brigante's ascension within the heroin business. Seduced by the power of the brutal New York underworld Carlito Brigante enters a deadly circle of greed and retribution. Carlito is on the fast-track to becoming Spanish Harlem's number one kingpin but quickly learns that the only way to survive at the top is through loyalty to his friends and respect for the rules of the street.

The DVD version I have of this has no extras but its one of those films that is just worth buying and watching although a special edition would be nice.
The film is a gangster film but is different to the usual films of this genre - it opens with Carlito ( Al Pacino) being shot at a train station and narrating the story of how he got there as he is wheeled down the platform by the medics.
Its set in 1970's New York hence Pacinos stylish leather mac and beard and tells the tale of Carlito Brigante - a legendary Hispanic gangster who gets sprung from prison on a technicality by his oily lawyer Kleinman (an exceptional and unrecognisable Sean Penn). Carlito is through with crime and has a dream of buying into a used car dealership with someone he met in prison. This would get him out of New York and down to the coast.
No-one believes him - especially the DA who goes to desperate lengths to get evidence that will put Carlito back behind bars. As a favour for an old friend Carlito agrees to run a nightclub as the current manager is on the take due to gambling debts. He agrees on the condition that everything is above board and he only stays until he has raised his cut to buy into his dream and then he is gone.
Nothing runs this smoothly though and everyone seems to be desperate to get Carlito back in - his first mistake is to go along with his young cousin on a routine drug deal as his cousin feels it will make him look good to go in there with a legend. This particular set-piece is brilliantly done and ends with everyone but Carlito dead.
This is where everything starts to go downhill for him - the only light he has is Gail, the woman he fell for before being busted, he never told her what he did or where he went as he didn't want her seeing him in prison. Hence her frostiness towards him when he shows up at her dance-class.
Soon everyone is wanting a piece of Carlito, including a young punk on his way up, "Benny Blanco from the Bronx", who crosses Carlito in his club and Carlito makes the mistake of not killing him....
To give anymore away would spoil a lost gem of a film made by people at the top of their games - Pacinos world-weary performance anchors the film and along with Brian De Palmas excellent and stylish direction, Sean Penns amazing performance and a brilliant and involving storyline this makes for an instant and underrated classic of the genre.

My favourite film of all time! this one has it all. Pacino delivers an amazing performnce in this De Palma gangster film. Pacino plays a heroine king pin in the New Your hispanic world of organised crime who is trying to get out. Sean Penn in support gives a great performance as the sheister lawer. The acting, dialogue, plot and beautiful soundtrack make this film almost perfect. I would say better than Scarface.

Advantages: great story, great actors, great lines Disadvantages: none whatsoever
Pacino and DePalma reunite and the result is once again phenomenal. "Carlito's Way" is a tasteful combination of a great story told by a master filmmaker; astounding actors skillfully playing some truly fascinating characters; a wide range of flawless film techniques and some truly great one-liners. I would recommend this film to Scarface fans, Gangster movie fans and anyone with a taste for outstanding performances. This truly is a captivating and ... ...Puerto-Rican ex-con, Carlito Bringante, is released from prison on a legal technicality. He is seen as a legend in the criminal world, the same world that is shocked by his decision to go straight. He takes a job managing a low-life nightclub and even re-kindles an old romance but finds himself being dragged back by his past connections and the absurd contrivances of his lawyer and best friend. After several of his associates and even some 'wannabe' ...

DVD Description
Notorious Puerto Rican heroin dealer Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) is released from jail on a technicality thanks to the manipulations of his sleazy lawyer buddy (Sean Penn). All he wants is to keep his nose clean and earn enough money to start a business in the Bahamas--and maybe rekindle romance with his old flame, played by Penelope Ann Miller. Instead he finds himself back in trouble as a result of old-world codes of honour and misguided loyalties. It all takes place in 1975 Manhattan, in and around a nightclub Carlito manages, so there's plenty of classic disco music pulsing on the soundtrack. John Leguizamo plays one of the younger generation of hoodlums out to prove something. Viggo Mortensen and Luis Guzman star as a couple of Carlito's buddies from the old days. Brian De Palma, who directed Pacino a decade earlier in SCARFACE, makes this seem almost like that film's sequel. As expected, there's plenty of elaborate tracking shots and suspenseful set pieces, most memorably a pulse-pounding chase through Grand Central Station. It's adapted from two novels by New York Supreme Court Judge Edwin Torres based on his childhood in East Harlem.
