DVD Description

Includes the crime dramas CARLITO'S WAY and CARLITO'S WAY - RISE TO POWER. In CARLITO'S WAY, Notorious Puerto Rican heroin dealer Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) is released from jail on a technicality thanks to the manipulations of his sleazy lawyer buddy (Sean Penn). All he wants is to keep his nose clean and earn enough money to start a business in the Bahamas--and maybe rekindle romance with his old flame, played by Penelope Ann Miller. Instead he finds himself back in trouble as a result of old-world codes of honour and misguided loyalties. It all takes place in 1975 Manhattan, in and around a nightclub Carlito manages, so there's plenty of classic disco music pulsing on the soundtrack. John Leguizamo plays one of the younger generation of hoodlums out to prove something. Viggo Mortensen and Luis Guzman star as a couple of Carlito's buddies from the old days. Brian De Palma, who directed Pacino a decade earlier in SCARFACE, makes this seem almost like that film's sequel. As expected, there's plenty of elaborate tracking shots and suspenseful set pieces, most memorably a pulse-pounding chase through Grand Central Station. CARLITO'S WAY - RISE TO POWER features an all-star cast in this remake of CARLITO'S WAY. Set in Spanish Harlem, this version stars Jay Hernandez, in a star-making performance, as Carlito, who is on a comet-like ascent to the top of a successful crime ring. But being a kingpin takes a lot of support and the loyalty of a posse of complicated and violent friends, played by seasoned actors Mario Van Peebles, Luis Guzman, and the multi-talented Sean 'P.Diddy' Combs.

Carlito's Way is the best way to got
Review of Carlito's Way DVD by Bandit_Haze

Advantages: very informative dramaticall film
Disadvantages: Al Pacino, should not be messing around with young girls, i just aint right

...Carlito's way tells the story of a man who wants toleave the crime world but keeps being dragged back in by corrupt friends and unwanted admires. Carlito's Way bridges the gap between the crime world and the straight and shows that sometimes there may not be much differences. In order for Carlito Brigante to go straight he has to raise $75,000. In order to get $75,000 he has to do some things that he does not want to. Maybe the moral of the story was to say do not get involved in crime to begin with but most people would probably know that already. I think and I maybe wrong on this, that Carlito's Way is a message to ex-criminals, that it is possible to 'go straight' after being in prison, even though Carlito Brigante failed at making a new life for himself, it shows the mistakes he made in other words, what NOT to do. PS ignore... Read review

Carlito's Way - Carlito's Dreams
Review of Carlito's Way DVD by SophieWehr

Advantages: Excellent performances, storyline
Disadvantages: None

...the streets in the modern drug world, that Carlito views as an insignificant pumped up youth and treats him accordingly. Little does he know, Benito is his biggest threat and represents the small crack in the beginning of the rest of Benito's life... SUMMARY *********** A full-bodied 138 minutes of film, every role powerful and with amazing direction from Brian De Palma. You feel the tension and follow every move eager to know what happens next... This is one of the few Al Pacino movies I have actually bought - although I love him as an actor, I find it hard to buy any DVD's unless I know the film is really a classic. I also bought Heat and Serpico for the same reasons, although Carlitos' Way is still top of the 3. You won't regret watching this if you like good acting and a good storyline - I promise!... Carlito's way - gangster triumph
Review of Carlito's Way DVD by BIGHORSE

Advantages: Excellent acting from a cast offering little aside from Sean Penn and Pacino
Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea but anyone with any time for gangster movies must see this one

...Carlito’s way is a great alternative gangster film, offering what might believably be real insight into the mind of a gangster who gets out of jail after serving only 5 years of a 30 year sentence, not at least due to the effortless work of his long-time friend and lawyer. Said lawyer is straying far too near to the underworld himself these days though, and between inhaling half of Bolivia nasally and ripping the wrong people off trouble is bound to ensue. The film ends most intriguingly, and is one of those that will cause argument as to what the final outcome actually is supposed to be. Pacino is pure brilliance, and the rest of the cast do as well as they can to keep up.... Read review
