A year ago, bored with repeats on Nick Jr and Cbeebies, I checked out the children's listings on Sky for my daughter, and noticed a channel I had not seen before...Tiny Pop. I was astonished to see they were showing the Care Bears (not currently, but they were then). My daughter fell head over heels in love. She loved the Care Bears so much she asked father christmas to bring her all the Care bears (he managed to get her ONE lol). When Tiny Pop stopped showing the programme, both she and my young son missed it terribly and asked if it was on DVD. A quick check revealed it was indeed, and so we made this purchase.
This is not one of the new movies made of the franchise; this DVD contains 5 of the original episodes of the Care Bears TV series from the 1985. Taking place in the Kingdom of Care-A-Lot, the bears spread love and caring throughout the world while facing many personal challenges. This particular disc is a follow onto Vol 1 (I will review that when I locate the Caio listing), and contains 5 episodes. The episodes are: The Big Star Round-Up (episode 7, series 2) The Camp Out (episode 8, series 2) Bravest of the Brave (episode 10, series 2) The Long Lost Care Bears (episode 11, series 2) Birthday Bear's Blues (episode 12, series 2)
The disc is 110 minutes long, and the episodes appear to be complete and unedited. the transfer from film is excellent, and the sound is clear and unmuffled, which is a niggle I often find on cheap DVD editions. It is no frills, so without any extras, though occasionally I have seen this edition released around holidays with a bonus Care Bear cuddly toy with it. My only complaint is while it is inexpensive enough, the series only ran for 2 series, with 22 episodes the first series, and 28 on the second. It would have been much better to have released these as series box sets for a few pounds onto the price, especially as then we would get the episodes in proper order without the skipping of some episodes in-between such as has happened here. In fact, the 2 discs, Vol 1 and Vol 2 have huge gaps in episode continuity when lumped together. I think this is very sloppy in terms of release, though it may just be the purist in me. This lack bothers me enough to lower it two stars though as I feel it really lets down the DVD release of such an iconic programme.
